Using Crawl or Nethack Tiles
« on: January 29, 2012, 09:49:17 AM »
You think the Crawl or Nethack guys would mind if I used their tiles for my card game?

I could always use the Oryx tiles or give a go at creating my own. But I really like the Nethack and Crawl ones. My game is a bit of an homage so I think the graphics would be nice.

EDIT: Okay now I feel dumb. Here are some public domain tiles. I had forgotten about them...

You can also use David Gervais tiles:

Those are great as well. I'll see how they look on the cards and go from there.

I second that. What is free to use and what is not? And what restrictions? I've noticed none so far on the Gervais tiles. I could be missing something. And what about Nethack? Crawl? All free to use? Credit needed? What if money were to be made?

The money part might not be that important now. But what if someone were to capitalize on nostalgia and make a few dollars while putting the images into their game?

  Something to think about, surely.

And what about Nethack? Crawl? All free to use?

If not sure, ask permission from the author of the tiles. Some people seem to think that if the game is freeware it's ok to use tiles from it. No, it's not ok. It's illegal actually.

Worse thing is that it looks lame. It's far better use own design and look in the game, it will be much better than same old tiles used in n+1 projects.

well, http://rltiles.sourceforge.net/ are free, as long as you provide their information any time you use them (which i have forgotten to do...bad me...)
and those provide quite a lot ot work from.

but i would not use anything else without contacting the owner/developer/artist/whatever.
i downloaded lots of sprite sheets, but i'm afraid to use them :(

(as krice said freeware does not equal "steal my assets"...but if you ask and give credit, lots of people are ok with it)

i'm using a combination of the david gervais tiles , and a few from http://rltiles.sourceforge.net/

Might find something there- all of it is free to use.
