Darkest videogames ever
« on: November 19, 2011, 07:10:42 PM »
Let's make a thread about the darkest games we ever played.

I'll start with I have no mouth and I must scream.. if you don't know it please watch the intro:

Another very nice one is the first Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen (top-down view). The initial crypt amazed me the first time I played.. immersive music, the sound of thunders and prisoners crying, Kain diabolic laugh when he swings the sword (or even better his "VAE VICTIS!"), drinking blood from chained girls.. and then lots of rain, dark forests, etc. Fantastic.
Here's my favourite cinematic:

What I enjoy the most in roguelikes: Anti-Farming and Mac Givering my way out. Kind of what I also enjoy in life.

I thought that Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Reqiuem was nice and dark.

All time darkest game, for me, was Heavy Rain. So dark that I actually had to convince myself to continue playing.

Dunno if it counts as dark, but Friday the 13th for NES scarred the crap out of me when I was a kid.

Demon's Souls, specifically the prison world
Dark Souls, specifically Blighttown

Penumbra and Amnesia certainly.  I won't say where specifically in case anyone playing them reads this and doesn't want spoilers :)

Hm... I guess it's Yume Nikki for me. Not very dark on the surface, but bizarre and very very disturbing. And it has a real downer ending.

I've played dark, creepy games. Scary, yes, but most of them are not genuinely disturbing. They don't keep you thinking even months later about all the horrific implications and theories needed to explain the world in which the game takes place. Trying to find out which places actually are in the same world. Whether this other place is real, or a weird mirroring of a real world place, or just in the protagonist's mind. What this other other place is supposed to mean. The deeper you go, the more disturbing it becomes. When I finished playing it, I was having nightmares of the White Desert. And the City In The Sewers. That is what I call dark.

House of Leaves: The Game would be pretty neat.

Dark as in scary or dark as in you need to increase the brightness on your monitor to see properly?

And if we are talking about scary, why haven't the actually good ones mentioned yet? I mean like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame (Project Zero).

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of The Earth

I'm getting goosebumps just thinking of the escape-scene... truly scary with a dark settings.

Vampire: Bloodlines had some fairly dark aspects, some of which were quite brilliantly subtle and insidious.

Yume Nikki
If you liked Yume Nikki, you'd be in for a hell of a ride with .flow. If it was nearly as long as Yume Nikki it might even be better, but overall it's even more dark and disturbing, more thematic and threateningly cryptic, and it's even harder to install.

What about these titles?

-Shadowman
Insane atmosphear imho. Especially Playrooms...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dsj9mGHlqSA

-Thief 1 and 2
Apart to be incredible games, the atmosphear is amazing and dark! Also the cradle level of the third is "powerful".

-Stalker (all 3, especially modded)
In a stormy night, being chased from a chimera  is not good... You sense the danger... And you are in the Zone.

- Alien vs Predator:
the first one: insanely fast and dreadful game... Not easy that a game is so fast and scary.

Nightmare House 2
-a source based mod for Half Life 2 episode 2, very dark, scary and nice to play.
(i still have to look to Cry Of Fear mod for HL1, it should be dark and good too)

I want to mention these 2 games, not scary or disturbing but dark and with a wonderful atmosphear:

-Severance: Blade Of Darkness
Masterpiece combat system, truly a wonder....

-Arx Fatalis
There are some nice undeground dungeons. I've never finished it, but i plan in the future...
