7DRL Reviews!
« on: March 16, 2008, 11:28:29 AM »
Hi,

I figured I'd start a topic for reviewing the several 7DRLs that are being done this year. Feel free to add your own reviews!

I'll start with Fatherhood, by Jeff Lait:

As part of the review I must say I couldn't make the game work via the linux executable, nor I could build it properly, so I had to play it via wine.

The game is about you being a father who must save his homeland from the environment, which provides challenges in the form of floods and fire. There is no combat per se in this roguelike. You have to pile stones to stop the different dangers, the more land you keep clean, the better your score.

As a father, you have three sons, which you must keep an eye into. You can make them help you (with a fair bit of work), or you can just let them play about, risking your deaths because of the lack of support.

The game is really interesting, more akin to a turn-based strategy game than a roguelike. You have to place barriers into the path of the flood/fire, so the danger stops there, so you have to look for the better places to cut it quickly and without putting yourself to danger. Every move you make really counts, since the environment doesn't stop, so you'd better have a good plan.

Managing your children is a pain: they almost always do what they want, and help little. Just before, a child pushed one of my rocks out of its place, making the flood kill us all. Oh, the youth of today!

Anyway, the game is really imaginative and interesting, and worth checking out. Please do keep in mind that it'll feel more like a strategy game than a traditional roguelike, but it's nice to see new, original ideas, being worked.

Good work, Jeff Lait!

Chrysalis: Slow world generation and then some odd menu selections that probably affects to gameplay some way, no idea how. The gameplay is slow and I saw only brown terrain and some creatures. When I tried M for map and pressed Esc.. you know.. right. The program exists without warning. Do NOT make program exit by Esc without warning, if you don't use it like ALL other game designers: to exit the current window or whatever.
That was it. Game over, Chrysalis.

seems like everyone is getting on the dwarf fortress bandwagon and doing uber world generation stuff now. I have no interest in playing Fatherhood much. Nice exploration of ideas tho but not the kind of thing I spend my time playing.

Fatherhood: Not a roguelike.

Numbers: This must be the first 7DRL I actually like. It's very simple, but the game design is nice and you can play it right away without complex roguelike-keyboard commands. I also like it because it's easy:) (At least in first two levels I tried.)

Tribe: vague user interface. Could not figure out when and how to use bombs. Tried to read README, but it didn't have line breaks. This piece was no doubt created in linux, the master of vague software. Tried to enter next level, but wasn't "ready" to go there. No explanation why. Sure has some puzzle elements in it..

TrapRogue: Some keys not operating in finnish keyboard (for example > and ?). Hard to see keyboard commands or enter the next level. Doesn't seem to be that interesting. Traps are just annoying.

MegamanRL: This is not a roguelike either. And it's bad in all imaginable ways.

TimeRogue: Download link seems to be broken.

Let's just think of it. Platformers were better in first 8-bit computers, they had some kind of primitive graphics and much better controls (except Livingstone I Presume which had about equally bad controls). I guess you knew your game was going to fail, because the concept just doesn't work.

I wouldn't exactly say the game "fails". Given that he received a lot of praise for it. Yes, it is different and its definition as a roguelike is borderline but then again DoomRL or DwarfFortress aren't exactly traditional Roguelikes either and are amongst the most celebrated gems of RL gaming.
I liked the concept, for me it worked quite well. Of course there are bound to be problems but then again, it was developed in 7 Days. Show me one 7DRL that is absolutely perfect and flawless.

Well I hope I didn't depress Slash:)
I think 7DRLs are nice for training your skills as game developer, but most of them are just horrible as games. They give you the opportunity to suck:) Then I guess usually people just leave 7DRLs as they are and don't try to extend them to something more playable.

Not everything in life has to be a masterpiece, you know. Have you thought that perhaps some people do things just for fun? 7 day roguelikes are, in my opinion, a sort of "feat of arms", a self-made objective that you set out to fulfill. It probably gives you some experience too :)

haha, no hard feeling... it is just I think you must say WHY something sucks instead of just saying it sucks in all imaginable ways ;)

You are almost right about 7DRLs, when will you get to do one? it is an englightening experience. Also it makes you stronger and raises your self-confidence :)
