Omega

I found this gem a few years back, and played around with it the best I could given its rather unfriendly start of "lol you have been sucked into your PC, have fun being lost".

I enjoyed the everliving daylights out of the concept of the game, got a kick out of the overly-complex inventory management (an interesting dose of realism away from the Nethack and Angband I grew up on), and liked what I managed to see of the combat system. All in all, it's a game I'd like to play.

Now the problem: I have never been able to figure out what the hell I should actually be DOING. Aside from dying repeatedly in the hedge maze. I went to the Goblin Cave once or twice, but never managed to be very successful with it.

So, any of you folks had any deeper ventures in the game that you can share to perhaps give me a nudge to get me going? Try and avoid out and out spoilers if you can.

Thanks

The trick is to join the thieves guild so you have a way to sell identify and sell your loot.  You'll also want to have a way to gain spells.  Make sure to search frequently in the hedge maze.  Especially next to doorways.

How would one avoid dying to the first monster they encounter.... again and again and again?

Well, I'm not sure what you've been trying to fight...  But here's the first steps I follow when I start a new game.

1.  Join a temple
2.  Join a melee class guild (mercenaries, arena, or paladins)
         Equip your gear
If you joined the arena, type 'F' and set up your extra attack
3.   Join a magic using guild (college or mage guild)
4.   Steal money from the ATM
5.   Join the thieves guild
6.   Check the pawn shop for useful items (ie boots of speed)
7.   Buy some food (5 buckets should be fine)
8.   Travel to the Arch Druid (If you don't know where he is, try talking to the Oracle in the hedge maze)
9.   Travel back to starting city
10.   Join the explorers guild
11. Talk to King and/or Oracle to find out where to go for your quest.
12. At this point you should be level 4 without ever having to swing a weapon or cast a spell.  More then powerful enough to survive your first fight.

Extra Tips
1. Take your time when exploring the dungeon.  Make frequent trips back to the city to identify/sell loot to the thieves guild.

2. Take the arena slowly.  It gets hard rather quick and there's (almost) no way out once you're in there

3. Remember you can 'H'unt in the wilderness

4. Use your mana  wisely.  You have to level-up or pay money to recharge it.

5. And remember, this game is more about magic then melee

6. The hedge maze is DEADLY!  A single trap or out-of-depth monster in there will ruin your whole day.  search frequently and be prepared to run.

If you need any other tips, I'll try to help.  However, I cannot claim to be an expert.

Alright, that definitely gives me something to go on. I was dying to everything... I think I once killed a hornet and once killed a tetse fly, but had died perhaps 20 times. The goblin caves: always died against the first monster. Really hardcore.

I will start trying out this method. Your help is much appreciated.

EDIT: alright, I too like the concept, but this game is a nightmare, especially considering that the first 15 minutes of gameplay revolves around getting the same two crappy items from the shop so that you can be killed outside by a freak accident. I've killed a couple monsters at this point, tried a few arena fights, but I feel like I've wasted several hours mostly repeating the process of finding the shops, buying from the shops, and dying.

EDIT EDIT: Playing this game makes me wish that Incursion were finished.

This sounds bad, but you could just get past the point where you explore all the shops and savescum from that point while you're learning...  Because I totally know what you mean... exploring those shops every time is a huge pain if you're not experienced enough to stay alive yet.

I think I may have gotten over the ultra brutal first spike in the difficulty curve. I'm able to get to the you know who at the very beginning, anyway, and I understand how to do most of the things on the to-do list at this point.... one random question - how do you light a torch? I activate it, but nothing happens.

After some experimenting I have to admit i can't figure out how to use a torch either.  If I figure it out, I'll let you know.
