Recettear
« on: August 09, 2010, 03:33:51 AM »
Recettear is a game in which the player character runs an item shop in a generic fantasy world.  You fill your shop with swords and wizard robes and such, you haggle with customers over the prices, and then you use your capital to stock better items and repeat the process.

The reason I'm posting the game here is because one of the best ways to get items to sell is by dungeon crawling.  The player character doesn't fight, so you hire mercenaries to do it for you.  You play as the mercenary in randomly generated dungeons full of monsters, traps, and treasure.  It controls something like A Link to the Past.

You can loan equipment items you own to your mercenary to help them last longer, so you do have to decide whether the income from selling the equipment is more valuable to you than the extra power you get from actually using the equipment.

The best solution is to sell your strongest equipment to your mercenary buddies.  That way, not only do you get the income from the sale, but you also still get to use the equipment when you play as that mercenary in dungeons.

The visuals are way too anime for my tastes, but I thought the gameplay was fun.  It also can get pretty wordy, but the game lets you skip dialogue whenever you want by pressing the escape key.

A less ambitious, but more polished and (in my opinion) fun version of Elona might be a good way to look at it.

Currently there's no way to purchase the full version in english, but a demo is available which lets you play for one in-game week.

The official site of the english translation is here.

Yep, I'm looking forward to the full version and have high hopes on the Indie localization company.

I also hope the dev company's next game is able to make it in English, as it is supposed to function something like a cross of Civilization and Final Fantasy Tactics...

Rise dead topic! Rise!!!

*Ahem*

I love the game. It's stupid amounts of fun. And just like with Dragon Warrior 4... I had endless fun just running the store for some reason. I think this needs to be a feature in more games. :)

But I ended up getting a little frustrated trying to finish off my item list. Some of the rare components are practically non-existant.

Also, trying to make the best type of an item (basically with the highest + on it) needs you to make the base components out of materials with a high +. So say a sword is made from two components. You need to find those two components with a +4 on them. Then you get a +8 sword. The final gear is made from multiple items, so if you get enough higher level items, you can max out the + on your gear.

It's just a pain to actually accomplish this. :p

To stalk again the threads of mortal men!

I've bought Recettear today after giving a whirl to the demo yesterday, and I am quite happy with the purchase. Feels quite roguelike-y, just twitch-y instead of turn-y.
