The thing about 'ordinary' roguelikes in 7DRL is that it's a personal challenge. If you've never made a game before, then simply making something that plays might be enough of a challenge for you. If you've never made a roguelike, maybe getting a generic dungeon crawl up and running would be an achievement in seven days. Participants aren't all starting from the same position. 'Ordinary' roguelikes might not offer much from a player's point of view but they have their place.

A very important point about this (and the spring break one) is that they are challenges, not competitions. So anything that someone can do to practice making something roguelike or even roguelike-like-like-like is a good thing for both them and the community. Even failing at it can be a good thing as that often teaches people how to scope projects and estimate work load better.

Who would be up to participate?

Sure! Though it might be worth considering combining it with the Procedural Generation Jam which is planned for 8th to 17th November:

I'd prefer to do a 7dRL in October and another less roguelike but still procedural thing in November. But then again my plan is to refine SquidLib for the October 7dRL and test it during that and then release it for the Procjam, so it's all selfish reasons :)

It's the personal challenge vs competition thing that confused me. Got it now.

I hope I'm able to set aside a little bit of time to participate. Any call for dates on this yet? Anything after 15th should be more doable for me, starting saturday 18th would be best on my schedule, just to throw that in there.

If you want to participate in 7DRL, write an "ordinary" roguelike that lots of people will play and talk about, I think that's great -- but it is in fact an extremely ambitious project. Most 7DRLs with "normal" inventories and stuff lack something else to make people discuss it, apparently it is hard to do everything in 7 days. Even without the limit, there are so many roguelikes nowadays that it is hard to get a following.

As others mentioned, writing an ordinary 7DRL might still be a personal achievement, even if it did not become very popular. The more innovation, the easier it is to become popular. Maybe there is something that is innovative on one hand, but it does not break your "ordinary roguelike" feel at the same time?

Yet, there have been 7DRLs which were quite standard, but yet I would consider them notable... for example, Dungeon Monkey which started it all, Martin's Seven Day Roguelike (which later became Martin's Dungeon Bash), or DiabloRL. By definition, a 7DRL should play like a roguelike, and there are lots more of notable 7DRLs where the gimmick does not affect the "ordinary roguelike" feel that much (for example, they still have a somewhat normal inventory).

Yes, combining it sounds like a good idea :)

I thought that nothing is happening about the mini-7DRL challenge, but I have just noticed the announcement. Maybe it should be made more visible?

Are there many people planning to entry? Will there be a review process as usual?

I don't think it's going to be too formal. I'll certainly make something and submit it to the procjam too.
