Web of influence
« on: October 17, 2013, 04:32:23 PM »

Most data is from http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/
with the exception of the Rogue Influence on Omega which is from the cat file in the omega src.
I threw in the games listed at http://forums.roguetemple.com/index.php?topic=3590.15
things that are Rogue-style games are red circles things that are not are blue.
I have withheld my opinion the links are strictly from the sources.

I am looking for what games are important but missing from the graph?
I am not looking for opinion on the links they are not mine and they are what they are.

Hmm, well the Mystery Dungeon series, starting with Torneko, for one should be a branch off from Nethack and somehow Angband given they lean heavily on both.

Somewhat similar, PRIME and ZAPM as well as Diggr and Incavead probably should be Nethack branches.

Valhalla/Raganarok should be in there someplace in the formative years/earliest as well as Castle of the Winds...

Tough project...

Does ToME in the graph mean v2, v3 or 4?
I'd make ToME 4 a separate branch going off ToME 2&3.

In related news, my Veins of the Earth would probably branch off Incursion and ToME 4.

You know, ADOM started out heavily influenced by Nethack, an influence that's still pretty apparent, so if I were you … ;) As for games missing, I guess Brogue should be hurled into the pot, and possibly Powder. Since you've got the Greek alphabet going, what about LambdaRogue? It kind of never got the attention it probably deserved, being quite polished for its time, but I think it helped push the genre forward. ToME4 probably deserves an entry of its own. Maybe add Caves of Qud (ADOM + Gamma World?), and GearHead springs to mind, as well.

And: Dwarf Fortress! And if you're willing to go down that road, Spelunky.

Sorry for bombarding you with suggestions, just pick and choose. Of course, any RL canon will be highly personal, so the games I consider influential could be utterly unknown to others. SImilarly, I've never even played Larn, for instance.

As always,

I read that in the article I think adding the link is warranted.
I see a definite Omega influence on Adom as well and the wiki used to agree but since herr Dr. Biskop changed it himself who am I to argue.

Essentially the map before with all the games listed as stable on http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php?title=Category:Stable_games
dropping those that did not connect to the graph.

A beautiful starmap of The Roguelike Sector.

But...it`s nigh on unreadable. Can you post higher-res somewhere? Also, is Linley`s Dungeon Crawl missing? I see it might be due to it`s absence on the wiki page - does it mean 4.0.0 is "unstable"?

Hard to read indeed---is LambdaRogue and Portralis in there as Angband descendants?  Both followed an eerily similar path/lineage as ToME, especially Portralis.

This project feels like it is begging for a gource'ing, if only for visibility with higher res and animation to shape things better:

Aye, and it begs for color coding somehow. The core in red, Angband and it's variants in blue, any other stuff in green...

And why is Angband listed twice? (yes, I peered at the pic closely)
