Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / Re: Public Rogue server
« on: February 11, 2010, 02:29:20 PM »
Oh wow, all these players came out of nowhere!  I'll drop in on the IRC channel, thanks for letting me know.

The bugs with staves and rusting leather were in the original game, so I'm not sure if/when I'll fix them.  If you have an opinion on whether the Roguelike Gallery should "stay true to original" or "develop a better version", let me know.

I'm hoping this weekend to get Rogue V5 working, to make ttyrecs downloadable, and to put the source code online too.  You can help by bugging me if I don't actually do any of this.  Also any comments about the website would be useful.

Thanks for playing, I'm glad you're having fun.  Now I'll have to get myself back onto the high score list...

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / Public Rogue server

I've set up a public server for the original Rogue.  It's still in the testing phase, but Rogue 3.6 and 5.2 are playable.  To play, ssh to rlgallery.org.  The username is rodney and the password is yendor.

The website's not finished yet, but you can see results and statistics at http://rlgallery.org/scoring/.

Let me know about any problems.  I know that games sometimes appear scrambled to people watching.  If you run into this, I'll need to know what terminal emulator you're using.  I'm hoping to get that bug squashed soon.  (Anyone know much about the internals of curses?)

Have fun, and keep waiting, I'm planning to add several more historical roguelikes.

Hit '@'.  That toggles it on and off.

By the way, does anyone have a chart for how much experience is needed for each level up?  I haven't been able to find one.  Is there a level cap, and if so, what is it?

2: 10
3: 20
4: 40
5: 80
6: 160
7: 320
8: 640
9: 1300
10: 2600
11: 5200
12: 13000
13: 26000
14: 50000
15: 100000
16: 200000
17: 400000
18: 800000
19: 2000000
20: 4000000
21: 8000000
That's the maximum.

This is for Rogue 5.4.  For earlier versions the numbers are slightly lower and the max level is 20.  I don't know about PC Rogue, but it's probably similar.

Classic Roguelikes / Re: Does everybody read NetHack spoilers?

If you just want to play and have fun, you don't need spoilers.  I was hooked before I knew there was anyone else who played.

If you want to get somewhere, reading the Guidebook, getting hints from the Oracle, and figuring out strategy will help a lot.

If you want to ascend ten times in a row, you'll need a lot more than spoilers.
