Design / Re: Item pricing?
« on: March 09, 2014, 12:42:47 PM »
I think this is one of the things that you really have to test when the game is almost ready. I found that I adjust prices all the time while testing to make it balanced. I also found that sometimes it makes for better gameplay to not have "realistic" prices. In my game food can be more expensive than a weapon just because it may be more valuable to the player.

The Roguebasin / Adding a page?
« on: February 23, 2014, 09:37:30 AM »
I have been trying to add my game to Roguebasin but gets the message that the action is not allowed because "suspicious new user is trying to add a new page". How to come around this? Should I make some random edits first?

I don't dare to say anything more than "within a few months", but I'll let you know when I set a specific date. I would like to polish it and get it tested a bit before I release. Thank you very much for your interest, I will post any updates on my blog.

Thank you Jo! Interesting read, and also interesting thread on Reddit. I had not seen it so thank you! Yes, it really seems Andrews description fits my game pretty well. I have a new post describing this concept further: http://www.thegroundgivesway.com/design-goal-variation/

I don't think I am familiar with that concept, do you have a link to where he talks about this? It would be interesting!

Other Announcements / A new roguelike - The Ground Gives Way
« on: February 03, 2014, 09:58:53 AM »
Hi!
I am a roguelike developer and I have been working on a game for a number of years now. It is called "The Ground Gives Way", It is currently fully playable and I plan to release it this year (for Windows).
Some of the features:

  • Improvisation-based progress (i.e., your progress depends entirely of what you find in the game).
  • Highly varying game play.
  • No experience points or character levels, no automatic health regeneration.
  • Hundreds of interesting items, and a lot of content.
  • Very simple and intuitive interface.
  • Small levels, short game time and rapidly increasing difficulty

You can read more about the design and development of the game on my new website/blog, www.thegroundgivesway.com. I hope you find it interesting!

I like to listen to video game music when playing roguelikes. For instance, I like this radio station (old-school game music): http://www.kohina.com/

Hi everyone!
I have been playing roguelikes for around 7 years now and I can easily say that it's my favourite genre. What introduced me to the genre was IVAN (great game btw for anyone who haven't tried it!) and from then I was hooked. Lately, I have been playing Angband the most, but I cycle through the major ones in different periods.

In addition I have been working on my own roguelike for maybe 4 years. I have been lurking on temple of the roguelike and r.g.r.* every now and then since I discovered roguelikes. Now, finally my game is very close to be finished and I'm planning to release it this year. So I have finally decided to "unlurk" :)
