Temple of the Roguelike / The Temple is crumbling down...
« on: March 22, 2019, 09:11:28 AM »
Let's be frank: this place is dying.

Now, forums across the internet have suffered from people moving to other models - Twitter, reddit, Discord etc, but I think there's more to that in the case of TOTR.

One reason would definitely be zero-moderation approach which allowed the resident, ahem, "troll", to almost single-handedly scare away just about any new member/dev and turn most of discussion (or even news) here into a toxic dumpster fire.

The lack of any control is also allowing the bots to flood this board with spam, one of which I see today is 3 days old. While some of them are amusingly intelligent, it's a sure sign of a forum dying.

The Announcements thread, which before was a kind of rock-solid resource and one of the better reasons to still check on this place has also suffered lately. I totally understand that getter77, who has been tirelessly maintaining it (and TOTR in general) for years may have other obligations or is just burned out. Perhaps he could get some support though?

Personally, my forum dwelling days are long-over, so I don't really have a horse in this race, but I still do have a great sentiment for the Temple - this is where my RL adventure has started after all. And  I do believe forums  still have a place in the internet life, especially in niche communities such as ours. Sure, most of the RL-chat is now on reddit, which is a decent resource but it has its flaws, main being its flash-in-the-pan nature.

Juts wanted to speak my mind about this for some time, not holding my breath for any changes or reaction (apart from the predictable one :) It would be nice to see this place revitalised but perhaps its time has come to an end, sadly similarly to that of the nearly-extinct species which is a Classic Roguelike.

HOW YOU CAN HELP & CONTRIBUTE

Up till now this project has been mostly an individual effort, only announced on Roguetemple forums and plagued by slow pace due to IRL debuffs. However, it now reached a major completion stage, where it makes sense to publicize it more widely and ask for rogulike community's assistance.

Here's what  would be most appreciated:
-simple "bug reporting" - despite thorough examination there are bound to be mistakes: spelling errors, archive/files/directory problems, doc-file mismatches and so on.
-trying to find & rescue games from the MISSING doc (http://arkhammanor.com/rpgbase/ARL MISSING.ods)
-testing the games: I've personally tried quite lot of them - but not all, and mostly on x64 Windows
-any historical and informational error corrections and contributions
-adding more games/sources/docs/info/etc
-compiling sources that have no corresponding binaries
-building either Linux or Mac side of this archive.
-providing feedback regarding structure and methodology of this project

Please read the ARL README or check the website for more details regarding this section.

The Roguebasin / IRLDB problems?
« on: January 08, 2017, 12:39:53 PM »
For some months now the database looked a bit skewed compared to what I remember from before - different layout, can`t choose categories/fields, the random/last updated/etc roguelikes table is gone. Now I tried a simple search and it doesn`t work.

Was wondering if it`s just me or is it broken in general. I tried it on Win 8,1, newest Firefox and old Opera.

Other Announcements / Arcen Games in trouble
« on: February 01, 2016, 06:18:52 PM »
Sadly, the harsh realities of indie development hit one of my favourite studios: Arcen Games. Seems their just-released roguelite Starward Rogue shares a similar fate to loads of other titles: great reception but very poor sales.

Chris Park, Arcen`s main man describes the situation in a lengthy post here: https://arcengames.com/great-work-on-starward-rogue-team-now-youre-all-laid-off/#comment-2325

Very honest breakdown of what happened, recommended reading for anybody interested in commercial indie game development.

It`s also - of course - a bit of a cry for help, but nothing this old cynic would consider unfair or inappropriate. And they`re really worth supporting - even if I don`t like all their games,  I have huge respect for them for trying original concepts in stale genres.

Off-topic (Locked) / Chaos Reborn aka Julian Gollop Returns
« on: December 24, 2015, 02:14:39 PM »
Yes, the Grandmaster is back. Next to Sid Meier, my all-time game design hero.

His Laser Squad on ZX Spectrum got me infected with turn-based bug, UFO: Enemy Unknown was a complete, forever replayable universe. Two decades later, it still has not been bettered.

Chaos Reborn is a remake of his earlier classic Chaos: The Battle Of Wizards (cover art byline: "Magic & Death On The Plane Of Limbo"...wow :) where sorcerers duke it out in turn-based (surprise) fashion...Single player, co-op, tournaments etc. It`s 50% off full price as an introductory offer now on GOG, worth getting even just to pay respects to the man himself, in a "Honk If You Turn Based!" fashion.

Temple of the Roguelike / Database & wiki corrections
« on: November 26, 2015, 09:38:16 PM »
I`m currently crawling through these for the Archive project and as a byproduct I also try and make note of all the inconsistencies and errors encountered. There`s quite lot of them - nothing major, but since it`s such an awesome resource it`d be nice to keep it tidy and up to date.

If anybody feels like doing some  maintenance work, let me know and I will either post or email my file.

I never knew there`s a successor to the wildly popular DoomRL in the works...just stumbled upon it while browsing ChaosForge forum.

Jupiter Hell was announced in 2013 and then all went rather quiet...but the studio broke the radio silence couple of weeks ago:

Seems they`re still at it, just messing around with 3D engine and such.

Off-topic (Locked) / Desura`s dead
« on: June 06, 2015, 11:03:58 AM »
It`s been sort of on the cards for a while now, but (aptly named) Bad Juju finally threw in the towel.

It`s a shame,  I quite liked the original Desura - it wasn`t  as upmarket as other stores and had loads of crappy content, but that was part of its charm, in a true DIY/indie spirit. Plus it was always nice to have another DRM-Free option out there.

Other Announcements / Cult: AOTOO development canceled.
« on: September 15, 2013, 11:29:04 AM »
As some of you surely have heard already, David Hagar, the developer of Cult: Awakening Of The Old Ones (open-world RL)  has announced he`s no longer working on it.

That`d be sad news and all...but hey,  games do get canceled, stuff happens. What makes this situation more spicy though is the fact that a year ago he raised 34K on Kickstarter to fund it - nearly 7 times over the original 5K goal. Ouch!

It`s not a huge amount of money and also I don`t suppose a deliberate fraud on the behalf of the dev - but still, it`s a poignant little story when you look at the whole Kickstarter phenomena. Raises quite a few questions - for example, what the hell were you thinking mate or how are you gonna refund it? (he said he will). Also the claim that in the end he only got 14K out of 35K pledged due to some "taxes, fees, and payments to contractors" is sort of dubious - taxes I can understand, but the latter surely counts as development cost?

On the grander scale I think it highlights one of the major flaws in the whole Kickstarter operation - the stretch goals lunacy. I was never a fan of it, since the beginning. So your game is uber-popular and the money is pouring in? Great news! Should you add new features? Hmmm...maybe...in moderation... but perhaps it`d be better just to concentrate on what was promised in the first place? Especially as these stretch goal estimates seem often pulled out of a hat - so the whole game costs 500K to make, but if you get another 250K you`ll add a map editor? (which you`re already using?)...or another city or character or what have you? Eh, bit rich this. (And don`t even start me on the madness that is Star Citizen. New goal for 20 mil: planetary FPS combat. ROTFL +WTFITS)

Don`t get me wrong guys, I`d love to see more features in, say, Wasteland 2 - but to be honest I`d rather have them complete the game in some sort of promised time frame (another thing that gets a free pass on Kickstarter)

Overall  it sure is a shame, Cult definitely had potential. On the other hand this story could - and should - serve as a reality check to other people jumping onto the crowdfunding bandwagon.
