Cheers fella, you're welcome to use them.

I Don't think I'll be able to top the period hats you have at the moment though :¬)

I have to say I was more interested in this before I saw there was a prescribed art style.

Hey Jo,

sorry for the delayed response, been busy 7dRLing.

I intended it to be a big steampunk mecha suit for a dwarf to wear. But honestly its whatever people want it to be, thats the nice thing about ambiguous lo res pixel art.

hows card like coming along? i cant wait to abuse the work printer making myself a copy :¬P

Hi Magnus,

I'm glad your telling folk about your game. The work you've done so far is really solid, especially on the user interface side of things. I can vouch for the fact that it plays pretty well even at this early stage.

Anyone with an android handset should get in touch and have a go, this games going to be kickass!

...not that I'm biased or anything :¬)

I second, the creature actions over stats. It plays to the strengths of board games much more.

modifying die rolls is a pain and best left for computers. Monster specific event tables sounds like much more fun to me, especially if you add evocative descriptions.

Thanks man, thats nice of you to say.

I wasn't sure whether anyone would find the stuff I've written interesting. I'd keep going regardless though, just to stop game thoughts rattling around my head all day.

I think the face on doors is the only way to go with a roguelike, after all its a slippery slope towards 3d with real mapping and bloom effects :¬)

Howdy guys,

Just to let anyone who is interested know, I have bundled up the second version of my tileset and it's ready to download from my blog. Its not the enormous update I had hoped for, but there should be enough new things for people to muck around with for a while.

Have a look and let me know what you think http://eight2empire.blogspot.com/

Thanks for sending me that link, It looks like fun. I'll have to get my friends to have a go at it with me. or maybe I should wait for mark 2 :¬)

I think i saw on rec games RL that you were looking to use graphics for this version. I think you should stick with the ascii, it looked great, a nice nod to its roots. Maybe add colour though to spice things up and aid identification of cards.

Off-topic (Locked) / Did anyone ever play Yoda Stories?
« on: January 27, 2012, 11:28:03 PM »
...it was a budget game for windows years ago, and was quite roguelikeish. It was quite enjoyable from what I remember but i'm sure it will have aged terribly.

I remember that each time you'd play it would generate a new mission based on one of a dozen different scenarios, but it would use different map pieces and stuff to make it slightly different.

a similar technique could be used to make a nice coffee-break roguelike for mobile devices... any takers? :¬)

There is an old boardgame I have tried to redesign a few times, its called 'The Sorcerer's Cave'. My redesigns mostly consist of redesigning the illustrations and adding additional cards because the core mechanics are perfect in there simplicity but the game pieces are fairly limited.

Its basically a simple dungeon crawling adventure for any number of players and shares some similarities with Roguelikes:

You uncover a random map segments each turn.
You encounter monsters that are either hostile or can be approached to join your party.
You're characters can carry a limited amount and treasure is weighted
you collect magic artifacts to boost your fighting power.
It is pretty fatalistic and stupid choices lead to death.

You should check it out and buy a copy if you can. I have bought three copies from charity shops over the years.

Thanks for the feedback Konijn.

You're right the wall tiles are too dark at the moment, my colour management has been less than ideal so far. I will brighten things up in the next release, hopefully that will be in about a week. I'm going to try and include building exteriors and roofs as well as indoor water (for sewers, pools etc) and some more scenery.

Thanks for taking up my tiles, I look forward to seeing what you make of them.

Hamish.

Programming / Re: Can a Roguelike with only monsters be fun?

That sounds like it would work just fine, but seems like a departure from the monsters only gameplay concept...

However you work it, i'm looking forward to the final product.
