Player's Plaza / Re: Are the classic "Trek" games roguelikes?

Anything with randomness gets called a roguelike or 'roguelike-inspired' these days.

Crafting just isn't a big thing in roguelikes for the most part.  It creates a different sort of balance than making players rely on random drops.

Not much comes to mind, to me a 'major' roguelike is something that has lasting endurance and gameplay over a long period of time.  Dwarf Fortress definitely qualifies in that sense but with all the usual questions about whether it qualifies as a roguelike.

Maybe give Sil or Brogue another 2-3 years in the pot and they might be major roguelikes.

-Early development (Very few roguelikes are worth messing with in the early stages, and many get abandoned)
-Having to install libraries and such to play (having to install NET/Java/Visual C++ runtimes annoys me)
-Only providing an installer exe and no simple zipfile option (Personal preference)
-Overly complicated keyboard controls and no mouse option (There's no need for 50 separate commands, condense similar ones and consider eliminating the mechanics behind commands that are only used a few times per game)
-Math that's a black box (I want to be able to eyeball my chances without using a calculator, Sil and Brogue both feature good gameplay without too many obscure combat modifiers)
-Too undocumented (I like the idea that I can consult a wiki somewhere if I want to know how some aspect of the game works)

Classic Roguelikes / Re: Dwarf fortress

There are some low quality clones, like towns and gnomoria, but to be honest they don't even come vaguely close to touching the level of depth and simulation in dwarf fortress.  There really isn't anything on that level, since most people can't spend their entire lives developing a game :P

You can probably say a number of not-so-nice things about how unoriginal Gnomoria is (and be completely right), but it hits the mark in a lot of areas Dwarf Fortress doesn't.

-Robobob puts out a release every week or two
-He squashes bugs on a regular basis
-He listens to community feedback
-He's willing to work on parts of the game that maybe aren't terribly interesting, like improving the user interface and reducing tedium.

Towns is perhaps best not commented about.

How about the shareware versions of the Doom and Quake games?

Could you please re-elaborate your question? I think it is hard to really understand it well.

I just meant not a lot of people even remember the original Witchaven game.  I understand making roguelikes out of XCOM and Doom because those were well known and well-loved titles.

As for the ADOM and Hack relationship, is ADOM based on Nethack/Hack code?

I've seen someone allege as much once.

I don't get what the big deal is, but on the other hand the results are less interesting if the same game wins every year.

That said, ToME does see quite a lot of development and polishing.  ADOM garnered quite a few votes and could possibly win next year if the tiles and music are finished by then.

Why would you make a roguelike out of Witchaven of all games?
