Although "Biggest Surprise" may be a bit too subjective to be "easily defined" in all cases, I'd say Cataclysm: DDA is earning top spot for that one. What a surprising explosion of votes this year!

I figured it would do well but man it's giving the big dogs like TOME4 and ADOM a run for their money.

It will probably be 'biggest surprise', pretty subjective sure but we'll include any other big surprises that we see.

I wouldn't say it's giving them a run for their money, but I just saw my humble roguelike get 10 votes and I'm floored!

I know KlingonRL is at 6 and I'm bouncing around. People can vote for more than once, I voted for quite a few of the smaller ones.

That always seems to happen to some each year in the dash to compile the lot of it towards the end---maybe next year a better plan would be to do a quarterly compilation and then the sum of the 4 be the grand list as opposed to all at once.

Post the list a week in advance so everyone can see it and add things. Tower of Despair was also not on there.

Is Adom 2 actually a game yet? Or URR? I think they are more like engine/tech projects. Still getting more votes than actual games.

As long as the game is released and runnable it should be fine. It's a way to show support for games that are still in development.

A much bigger problem is cheating. It's obvious there's multiple voting going on in the race between ADOM and ToME. I also watched Noxico get 800 votes in less than two hours this morning, and still rising (it's going up at a rate of about 10 votes per minute). Can't wait 'til it beats out both ADOM and ToME to take the title of "surprise hack of the year".

Yup. Considering the poll's growing profile, it would be nice to have a version much less prone to cheating. A Blogspot poll was fine back in the day when the scope was simpler, but when it's really the only one of its kind out there and multiple games start vying for it as a claim to popularity...

In any case, start saving the stats/results in advance before any others start to get wackier.

I like the developer of that game already. I'm also wondering where you could download some interesting sounding games in the list? I tried to look for 'Peli' from roguebasin, but it was not there. In case you didn't know, 'peli' is finnish and means 'game'.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume it's the developer himself voting his game up.

Peli is a 7DRL (http://pixelists.com/peli/day7/). Most of the obscure ones you can find on the 2013 7DRL list, seeing as a big chunk of the list is from this year's 7DRL challenge.

Noxico getting 1000+ votes is just ridiculous (to the point of being funny, IMHO; I'd love to read Andrew's blogpost congratulating Noxico with the victory). Obvious cheating in the poll isn't very impressive, although it could be a problem that random passers-by who consult the poll come away with the impression that some random games are the most important RLs today. Then again, maybe Noxico just has a massive following in some corner of the web that most of us don't know about ;) ;D

Cleaning up the poll a bit for next year is probably a good idea. In addition to making it a bit more cheat proof, it would be nice to see some minor fixes. The light grey font on white background showing the number of votes for each game is very hard to make out, for instance, and the table is formatted such that I have to expand my window to about twice the width of my screen resolution to be able to see the votes, at all.

As always,
Minotauros

Krice - If I remember correctly Peli was kind of neat but didn't have a ton of features.

One thing I liked about it was that your character started naked, with a little wiener poking out. Seriously.

It makes even more sense, because 'pippeli' is one of words for penis in finnish. I tried the game.. it's a turn-based random maze game, but a roguelike? Not really.

When I played Peli, it had a few nice touches (the pixel willy was indeed amusing) but zero depth and because the levels get exponentially larger each time and the power curve isn't really tuned at all the later levels get seriously dull.  Has it had any work done on it since the 7DRL?

Back on topic: it'll be interesting to see how Andrew deals with Noxico's possible cheating, since last year he got pretty upset about DarkGod simply soliciting votes from his own playerbase.

Paul I think it was more about Darkgod advertising in-game that made Andrew object.

22h to go and there is a suggestion of removing Noxico from competition altogether due to obvious multi-voting.
Title: Re: The Year's Most Popular (2013) - By Category - Thank You Ascii Dreams
Post by: Kyzrati on December 30, 2013, 09:38:56 PM
I don't think you can remove Noxico without removing ADOM and ToME, considering both just got 1000 votes in less than 12 hours, running neck and neck the whole way. Voting rates *decrease* towards the end of any poll that has already been sufficiently promoted to the player base before (as this one has), not increase by 30% in the last day. It's kind of silly.

ToME is now going up by 5-10 votes per minute, but it looks like the ADOM bot maybe gave up. Now I'm really curious how many votes these two would've gotten in a silent poll. I think there's a good chance ToME would still win due to its Steam presence and greater exposure overall, but ADOM did crowdfund this year and got the attention of a significant number of old and new players.

But the Noxico bot sure is picking up steam now! Giving the ToME bot a run for its money! I think this year we should have a new award category for "Fastest Voting Bot" ;)

Is it not set up as one vote submission per one IP address? Even then it can be doctored, but much less so.

I like the idea of being able to show support of multiple roguelikes in one vote, but if you can vote over and over again, it sort of makes your initial submission irrelevant doesn't it?

It's kind of weird that there are two similar sex roguelikes that came out this year, Noxico and Seduction Quest. (or at least I heard about them this year, they could have been around for years as far as I know).
I mean, two isn't very many, but it's certainly more than I ever thought there would be.

I'm very ill right now you guys and will not be able to crunch through everything, probably not for a couple of weeks.

Anyone that wants to can take over.

I'm trying to make an excel sheet, but that's not really working for me right now. Fevers make you dumb.

EDIT: Got it. Had to manually input all values.
