Title: legend of grimrock
Post by: siob on April 12, 2012, 01:31:29 PM
This looks like a pretty sweet, indie dungeon crawler you guys might enjoy.

I found this review: http://pc.ign.com/articles/122/1222602p1.html

It was released yesterday, I think I'll buy it. Has anyone tried it?

Great game! I've played a few hours and it creates exactly the feeling I expected (maybe even better). A MUST for any player of Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore etc.

Yep, and the eventual editor and/or people already trying to hack about are pointing in the very likely direction of random dungeon construction being rather possible once it all gets squared away alongside the set piece design.

This project/studio has a bright future ahead at this rate indeed.

Maybe you should try Dungeon Hack. ;)

Why no demo? Lazy i think, especially if you use "it makes it easier for DRM avoidance" excuse.  Especially when having no demo just makes people download the torrent before buying it.
Oh well plenty of other games out there.

Probably a bit dated now but it would of been what you were looking for :)

Well, there is no DRM, what with them also being available on GoG in a nice surprise alongside Steam and direct to dev.

I can't recall offhand if a demo is coming down the line or not alongside the other platform versions.

Thanks guys but I already know Dungeon Hack.. I think I played pretty much every single RPG the good old SSI developed.
It certainly had some interesting aspects, but also lacked complexity and depth.. two of the most important aspects in a roguelike in my opinion, because the more elements (traps.. items.. magics.. class/race combinations.. etc) the are, the more interesting/difficult is to become able to get the skills and intuition to master every possible situation. Dungeon Hack had just an interesting starting structure (eob-like + roguelike) but was also very limited.

Lol this is the first game ever i preordered (apart couple of other games that gave beta access) on gog (cause i hope gog will support more indies).
As far as i know if you buy directly from the site you get a drm free download and also a Steam key.
I tried only for half an hour and reminds me a lot of Dungeon Master (freaking awesome game, but i have yet to play Chaos Strikes Back wich i have heard is also freaking difficult), excellent impression.

You have the option to disable automapping: they included in the directory game a pdf with old looking squares to print to manually draw your map!
Since i hate hand writing i won't disable it! :P

Watching someone play LoG on youtube it's funny to notice that younger people never played Dungeon Master -style games. That guy had no idea you can move back (or circle strafe) to avoid monster hitting and he got lost (confused) in the first level, several times. Back in old days we didn't even draw maps, we just memorized levels.

Yeah, memory did the work. And in DM it was even harder to recongnize place as graphic was simpler.
If one don't backmove or circle he wouldn't pass first level... At least on "hard" monster brute force excede one of party memebers.

Loving this game, however I am finding that the puzzle elements are getting rather annoying, expecially on level 4-5? The level with all the teleporters and wall messges.  Oh well, I guess it is a puzzle/rpg game.

A tip that I have picked up is to jump in all the pits, a lot of them have items down there with some secret rooms.
Also I believe the default starting characters should be replaced with custom ones.

Anyone being killed by a giant spider? That final screen, of the last image you see before death, is scary as hell :)

ALso anyone found a ranged weapon yet?

I've tried that game before and did not enjoyed it. Maybe it was just too predictable. :-\

Yeah thanks, found it there too, once I decided to restart the game with custom characters and play "properly". Got the crossbow now too :)

Still loving this game :)  There are several elements that I will be putting into future roguelikes.

Damn. I'm so broke right now. I'll put this one on the list. This and Dredmore and Cardinal Quest. Also I need to buy an x-box to play Spelunky multiplayer, Braid, Castle Crashers and Fez. Isn't Cave Story also coming to X-box 360? Yeah, so that one too.

I wonder if anyone buys an xbox in order to play indie style games? I might, maybe, buy MW2 or 3 in order to play the missions on hardmode. Maybe.

I bought this yesterday and have been playing for a couple of hours now - I'm really liking the atmosphere and the nostalgia factor, although I'm finding the combat a bit tedious and fiddly.  Just beaten level 3, which I found rather annoying due to the large number of spiders - I kept getting poisoned and having used all my antidotes have to keep trekking back through the level to the big blue reviving gem thing.

You can maneuver such that a single enemy will never hit you, via a sort of circle strafing.  If you can't handle the controls on that, you can also rest through your poison (it does wear off eventually).

Probably the most important aspect of playing this game, is the circle strafe, or pillar dancing. 2x2 rooms are ideal combat areas.

We old school players learned tricks like this by dealing with rooms filled by skeletons 20 years ago.. good times!

Oh, I know all about the circle strafing, although I didn't know you could cure poison by resting - I'd assumed that would just kill you... the more you know...

Just played this game for 5 minutes.. loose stones in the walls.. carved stone mouths.. circlestrafing giant slugs.. throwing rocks to activate pressure plates.. good old times!! wonderful emotions..! those 5 minutes are already worth the 15 bucks, seriously.

I'd play it, but the only way to get it is by buying it online. =/
And to make things worse it requires a credit card. *le sigh*

do you expect to be able to insert your cash into your monitor?  What year are we in again?  Also, you can pay directly through your bank account with paypal fyi, no credit card needed.

I made a PayPal account but it still doesn't allow paying by debit. You'll need to do a bank transfer and walk all the way to the bank. Jeez, why do they make it so hard for me.

Usually I always pay by debit (y'know they just take the money they need from my bank account, takes like 2 seconds). Paying by bank transfer requires you to walk to the bank and also takes 1-2 days to be processed or even longer and I always run into trouble with it too, that's why I don't like it so much.
And for credit cards - I just don't want to get credit cards out of principle.

What strange country do you live in where paypal doesn't pull directly thru your debit card?  I've been using it this way for years.

Germany.

I can use debit when I buy at eBay(.de), but for Legend of Grimrock it says this payment option is not available. And seems for all other non-German websites it's not available either. Always asks me to pay with a credit card. Maybe you need to be in the same country as the seller to use it?

Also what is the point of loading money on my PayPal account if I can't use it to buy something? Is there a trick to it?

This is very strange dude.
Tell PayPal your situation and ask for an explanation.

I looked around on the internet and I'm pretty sure you can't pay with PayPal with direct debit. It only works in very few occassions, but it generally doesn't work for Legend of Grimrock anyway (on their forums it was asked several times too).

So the only way for me is to do a bank transfer to my PayPal account. Supposedly if there is money on the PayPal account, it will work for Legend of Grimrock, so let's just hope I can buy it. ^^

Hey guys, I finally manage to get this game!

Unfortunately there seems to be problem with the game: I can't save! I mean I can save, but when I load my saved game it always starts at the very beginning again. >_<
Is it not possible to save properly in the game so I can continue where I stopped?

Also is there a way to hotkey a spell so I don't have to select the runes every time?

Edit: Okay I guess you need to save at those crystals in order to be able to continue, weird that they did it like this. Unfortunately I can't seem to be able to defeat those undead skeleton warriors, any idea? They attack so fast that my group is gone really quick. I already tried using bombs and all that stuff but it isn't enough. x_X
