7DRL 2010 discussion.
« on: January 21, 2010, 09:34:58 PM »
I saw that there was some discussion over dates for the 2010 7DRL competition on the r.g.r.d. newsgroup, so I thought I'd post a link here just so that everyone got a chance to have some input. I can also post it in the front page if you'd like. Here's the link:

Well, uh, if you don't reply on Usenet your vote won't be heard too clearly  :P

Interesting, thanks for the post. I don't know why but I was under the impression that it only ran  one time and during one week. It's good to know it runs a few times so I can coordinate my schedule and perhaps join it myself as well.

Cheers.

No the only date for the official 7drl challenge is March 6th to March 14th.
The other dates were being voted on but only one is chosen.

There is nothing the says you cannot create a 7drl at any time.
Also IIRC we have had one extra comp one year.

So I'm counting 58 entries in my newsfeed so far (compared to 45 (?) last year, of which 25 won). Any predictions on number of winners this year?

I wouldn't bet any money on me. I'm absolutely insane. LAN battles? In a week? It's day two and I've no idea how I'm going to work this "serialization" thing, and I don't really have any clear concept about the game's mechanics, either. I'm absolutely insane.

I'll keep at it. I may fail, but I'll be damned if I run away!

EDIT: Um.... that isn't what you meant by "runaways," is it?

71 entries in my list.

This is my forecast:
Challengers: 76
Winners: 31
Failed: 31
Runaways: 14

Excellent, though I predict a slightly different ratio of failed to runaways -- say, about 25 to 20.

Good thing is that announcing messages have totally replaced spam (in google groups). Spammers must be confused. How did that happen?

The spam is mostly a Google Groups thing, not a Usenet thing. Problem is, I don't feel like paying to use a decent NNTP server, so I don't go to rgrd without a good reason.

Fenrir, I was the same as you until just recently, where I decided to try using a mail/feed reader instead of web-based as I was before. I found a free usenet server (non-binary groups only though) that works great so far -- aioe.org.

I can't say there's never spam, but it's more like 1 every 50 or 100 messages.
