Your timing is uncanny Slash as I'd just watched the 100% TAS of Kirby's Amazing Mirror the other day and thinking that the Kirby backdrop would work well for Roguelike sensibilities.   :D  With Pokemon being semi "done" otherwise, Kirby and Ninja Gaiden have my vote.

Oh, come on! It's got to be Carmen Sandiego! The spyness of it all! The setting being cities and landmarks, being able to travel, maybe going underground in the sewers! Man, it'd be AWESOME! Totally non-linear too!

EVO, although it's technically not a Series =(
But the whole concept of continously evolving your creature and progressing through evolution would fit perfectly for a Roguelike. Each major evolution step could also represent a major shift in visual appeal. :O

System Shock 2 would be pretty awesome. Been dying to play that game a while, but Vista (ugh) doesn't like it.

System Shock was brutal. I got it at around 2pm and thought I'd give it a whirl. I never saw any enemies early in the game but still had to quit and leave it until daylight. It's so scary! Love it! It's not DOOM-like scary, as in BOOOO! It's the ambience, the atmosphere!

Pokemon and Metal Gear tied in the top with 36 votes each, Mario follows with 29.

Shin Megami Tensei, whatever that is, seems to be a favorite :P
