Experimental Gameplay Project
« on: October 06, 2009, 11:59:42 AM »
Recently I have found something called the Experimental Gameplay Project, which is about creating games based on original ideas by a single person in 7 days, based on a common theme. Apparently it has created some great games, and it is well known in the indie game development community (which means that I have seen it in at least two places;) ).

I wonder whether there is any inspiration between this project and our 7DRL Challenge... some things are very similar (equal team limit, equal time limit, focus on experimentation). Apparently they both started in Spring 2005, and I don't see/remember any side admitting to drawing inspiration from the other one.

Maybe it would be a good idea for our next 7DRL Challenge to suggest basing the 7DRLs on the EGP's theme for this month (unless our devs have their own idea which conflicts with their theme, or their theme is incompatible with Roguelikes at all), so we can spam them with Roguelikes (AFAIK anyone can submit a game to EGP). :)

There won't be DLC for the Wii, the game wasn't built with that capability.

DLC?

DownLoadableContent.  In Shiren 3 for the Wii's case, additional dungeons were available to get as extra downloads among online rescues and the like.  For the US release, there will be no online infrastructure for some reason, but Atlus IS including all of the optional/additional dungeons on the disc to go with the game period.

Sorry about that, I think D. meant to post in another topic in the first place, then Omni had a fresh question, then I somehow didn't connect all the right dots in my head.

Perhaps if there was some way to move them to the Shiren 3 topic that I think was over in the other subforum?

It took me a while to be sure, but judging from his/her/its posts I think D.Veicy is a spambot. The posts appear somewhat related to threads by keywords, but they're just way off (in an amusing way, I have to admit).

Of course, I may also be a spambot, calling out spambots to appear human... ;)

It apparently copies the posts from other forums if the topic seems the same (Google finds the original posts, in case if you wonder). A funny bot, I wonder what's its purpose.

This sounds like fun, but I've no idea how this month's theme, "Art Game", would fit into a roguelike.

I remember a discussion on the xkcd forums about making bots that look for high traffic threads and duplicate them on another forum, so it seems like they always have something meaningful to say because they are copying posts back and forth.

7DRL challenge is soon, so maybe someone wants to steal EGP's theme for 7DRL as I suggested ;) As far as I understand, the march theme of EGP is "so what can you have the player do in 10 seconds?" Not sure how this would work with roguelikes...

Interesting bot. I've never heard of this type of forum bot before. I wonder what the possible purpose would be? Anyway, the 7DRL competition is the 7DRL competition, they were probably inspired by us, and I like our competition the way it is :)

I think Z was thinking more casually, meaning for a single developer to use the theme; I don't suppose he was proposing a change to the rules.

Yes, I don't want any changes to the 7DRL Challenge, I was just thinking that one could do something that conforms with rules of both, since they are very compatible. Just a suggestion for each individual participant. A bit like in this story about Roger Zelazny, who was phoned and asked to write a story about unicorns to be included in a collection, then he was phoned and similarly asked for a story about chess, then for a story about bars... and he wrote a story about a unicorn playing chess in a bar.
