I'm really sorry if this is inappropriate on this forum. You guys don't really have an introduction section...

I spent a lot of time on another forum, but eventually got more or less disinterested in the subject of the forum. I'm kinda looking for something to fill in the gap, or maybe just make a few friends with similar interests

I really like roguelikes... It's what I spend most of my time on the last few months (Sad, I know...). So I decided to check this forum out

Well, first impressions aren't very great, honestly. I'm 19. Grew up with a PS1... So I kinda missed the ASCII days... Struggling to get into ASCII roguelikes :P

I guess I mostly like roguelites. I am really into Spelunky right now... But I have played some traditional roguelikes (Well, mostly pixel dungeon. Was really into it).

I guess I just want a group of people to discuss adventures in roguelikes with. Is this the right place? Or should I perhaps look for a more generalized gaming forum?

Howdy! I'd say this is a good place, though there may be a focus on traditional roguelikes. You can also check out the roguelike subreddit, which is pretty active.

Welcome!  We do have an introduction thread somewhere, but you can't be blamed for not finding it.

Don't worry too much about not being an ASCII purist.  Getting used to text interfaces takes some time, and the graphical trend will keep on growing.  So don't struggle too hard because you think you're missing "real roguelikes".

You mentioned "people to discuss adventures in roguelikes with".  Did you mean sharing stories about the games we've played?  It would be nice to have more storytelling around here.  That was a big part of the old Usenet groups, but sometimes it didn't make the transition onto the Web.

If you like DCSS, they have a very active forum.  I don't think general gaming forums tend to discuss roguelikes much.

Hello and welcome!

ASCII does take some getting used to. Whether it's worth it or not is a matter of opinion, but I certainly can't blame you for being put off by ASCII.

I'm not a huge fan of ASCII too but I find this forum to be interesting any way - you will fit right in :)

Most people can't easily acquire art or tiles for their game, so they use ASCII. For some, this is temporary while they are still writing the game, for others it sticks and is permanent.

IMO, ASCII isn't much of an "evil" - it doesn't look bad at all. The terrain works great, especially with a dash of color. The only occasionally awkward uses are "@" (I know, shoot me) and letters for enemies.

But if you can get or make good tiles, then I say go for it.

Well, I don't agree with you that ASCII is bad because most of the times I play in it but there are also games that would look like shit if they were in ASCII, for example Elona would look bad and some other roguelikes.
