Atheism in Crawl
« on: May 23, 2014, 12:10:10 AM »
Hello. I'm wondering if it is possible to win a game of DCSS without choosing a god. I ran into the Ecumenical Temple about several levels ago, and decided to forego choosing a god, in favor of trying for a vanilla play though. As of the current moment, it would be highly impractical to go back to that level and choose one, and I'm not sure if another oppportunity is going to present itself.

Right now, I'm on level 11, about to enter dungeon level 12, and suffering from mild drain damage, but otherwise am somewhat ok. My character is a halfling with absurdly high slings and dodging skill, and moderate skills in fire casting and axes. Also, I am resistant to fire and ice. Thoughts?

One final note: Do we have to complete the key captcha every single time we post, for the duration of our membership? Or is there some cut off limit where the system goes, "OK. This guy's for real." Thank you.

It's possible, but there's no reason to do so.  Your character will be weaker and less interesting for no benefit.  Going from level 11 to the temple really shouldn't be a big deal.

And I don't remember ever needing to do a captcha before posting.

You can sometimes find altars on levels besides the temple. It's usually just one at a time, though, so hopefully it's a god that you'd want to follow.

I don't remember having to do it, that must be new. But I don't have to do it now, so there must be some cut off point.

The demigod race is restricted from religion, if you didnt know that. But having a god makes you way more powerful.

Just going back to the temple seems like the wisest choice for sure. What's so dangerous about backtracking?

Hello, everyone! Thanks for the advice. I decided to go with the Sil God, (the blue, contemplative god of spellcasting, I believe. Can't quite recall his last name.)

Unfortunately, I was killed shortly after, and on level 8, as well. :\

Well, crawl certainly isn't for the weak, I'll say that much.

I believe it's just temporary. Just coming back to the forms, I had to complete a captcha for a couple of my posts, but it has stopped showing up. Perhaps it stops at the 20 post limit?

Edit: Oh yeah, definitely 20 posts. You know, considering I'm only at 13. -_- Probably stops at 10 posts.

I'd say it's a shame to hear you died in the game despite taking the time to make a careful choice, but it's really how most of my characters go as well. =P I'll get a bit comfortable and think I have a chance, then I'm dead. You just have to keep at it, learn from your hundreds of deaths, and maybe get a couple runes some day.

DCSS luckily offers very convinient command that allows you to autotravel between dungeon levels and branches, you can do so with Ctrl+G. Going back to temple from any place in dungeon shouldn't realy take more than a minute of real-time, and since food is plenty in crawl, you shouldn't think twice about doing so, if you feel you need it everagain. Same applies to going back to stash etc.
