I'm working in C with ncursesw, on Linux.

Honestly, I can't blame my tools.  The problem is that I finish something and then spend days (or weeks) just looking at it and tweaking it and considering it and so forth rather than going on to the next thing.

In the back of my brain it's like I'm waiting for some mysterious kind of permission before I go on - as though maybe I have to give myself time to get used to the idea of the program being different before I can change it very much.  It's some kind of psychological thing that I *occasionally* push through and make significant changes, and the rest of the time I sort of spend "code gardening" - doing very small things that make the code nicer maybe but don't make any major changes.

You might be depressed the same way I am. You know, when you are alone in this world, an outcast because you dared to be different than others. You try to hide your feelings by having all sorts of projects in form of a difficult challenge. But you end up working reluctantly, because at some point you realize how it is and that your life is empty, without the thing even you as a superior human being are missing: love.

Well, at least that's how I feel.

Look, bro, writing a video game, talking about video games, or talking about writing video games is not likely to get you out of the place you're in. Neither is trolling the interweb or otherwise being a pain in the ass in virtual public. It might take the edge off, but it does not improve your situation -- which will get worse and harder to get out of the older/balder you get.

You say you're a smart fellow. Use that to find yourself an understanding woman. There is no substitute. If you were the kind of guy who can derive sufficient satisfaction from his work alone to keep himself going, you'd have a large body of satisfying work behind you. That ain't how it is, as far as I can tell. Get a different plan.
