3069 v1.3c released...and some miscellaneous stuff.
« on: July 07, 2009, 01:05:26 PM »
http://sites.google.com/site/free3069/   Hurray for a sequel of sorts to 3059  http://people.umass.edu/jvight/3059/

Cool feature set:

* Procedurally generated items, landscapes and quests -- endless lands and items allow for great replayability
* Dynamic skill and character development -- you improve upon what you do
* Open "sandbox"-style gameplay includes activities like building, fighting, lockpicking and stealing
* New special abilities like personal teleportation and invisibility
* Improved story that integrates with the game
* 360 degree movement
* Ranged weapons actually fire projectiles you can dodge
* Easier user interface
* Improved graphics, no longer ASCII-based
* Supports importing your own graphics
* State-machine based artificial intelligence
* Developed in .NET using Windows Forms

Also, there's this side project in the links section that caught my eye:

http://www.dsource.org/projects/freeuniverse/

Now,  can anybody explain to me HOW to download the latest and greatest version of this in a simple way?  I got the first public release file...but I'm guessing there's something more to it for the updated bits?

Finally, since it slipped past me for the past 6 and 4 years respectively:  Check out Flatspace 1 and 2 as they do, in fact, exist out there:  http://www.lostinflatspace.com/

Free demos,  can be purchased direct, also both are on Stardock's Impulse Digital Distro service.  As my funds are rapidly dwindling, I hold out hope now for Flatspace 2 on the cheap during an Impulse Weekend Sale.   8)

Cheers folks!

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!?!?!?! Whyyyyy did he have to use Windows Forms!?

Such a pity! I actually think fully character text-based interfaces are better than that!

On the upside though, the game seems pretty awesome :)

This game is really good example of how NOT to do Windows-based game. Well, it sucks other ways too.

v1.4:
* Fixed the "Out of memory" exception. This was caused by the "thumbs.db" (or other non-image) trying to be opened. Now only PNGs are recognized (as now stated in the documentation).
* If you try to create a player with the same name as a previous one, you will be asked if you want to replace the old player.
* A link to this site has been placed on the opening form.
* Fixed a bug that caused the level to not be displayed properly on a terrain cell.
* You now need a high enough level floor to support higher-level healing pods and laser traps.
* Reduced the price of the "homing shot" property.
* Fixed a bug that caused your item selection to stray.
* Now purchasing an item won't reset the item selection to the top.
* You can now sell construction items correctly (but they cannot be destroyed).
* Jobs to kill people/monsters now say "Kill" instead of "Destroy".
* Fixed a bug that allowed you to build on zone edges.
* Small improvements to the way effect descriptions are displayed (might not be so jumpy).

That was speedy.   8)

v1.5:
* Fixed a crash when trying to build things without a proper selection.
* Made the Information Window taller -- allows for more information to be displayed without scrolling.
* The Messages window is now easier to read (changed colors).
* "Show Information Window" option has been renamed to "Dock Information Window".
* Mining is slightly less lucrative.
* Improved the mining messages.
* Improved the "you have reached your item carrying capacity" messages.
* Added a line in the documentation about using the Locator to find your dead body (and loot).

Tis rolling on along.   ;D

v1.6:
* Added to the documentation (e.g. factions)
* Added 2 more graphics
* Now pressing "M" (or clicking the messages area) will try and dock the messages window when it is open
* Day & night durations have been increased
* Locator's background is now dark gray (instead of black) -- good for underground locator use
* Fixed a bug that caused newly programmed FPGAs to not show

In terms of update frequency, though maybe not in terms of potency of changes, I do believe this beats out Triangle Wizard.   8)

"v2.0 Announcement: I am going to improve the graphics and add more jobs! Thank you for all your feedback! :-)"

Yay.  Somehow I get the feeling this game will have an interesting evolution over time when all is said and done.
