I need to be more ambitious...
« on: March 22, 2014, 10:18:32 PM »
I think this is the second year in a row that I received a 2.17 score... not bad at all, but I keep feeling like I could do more in 7 days if I just put more time into it! :(
The Ed draws near! What dost thou deaux?

That's just one score though! You might still do better.

Being ambitious is good, but doing so can actually result in a lower score. I think I got a 2.22 overall last year and though I expect to score higher this year, I think my game is less innovative this time around....

Time is the limiting factor ;) Be happy you made a game! That's what the challenge is all about. Half the entrants didn't complete at all, and another half made shoddy games few would be called complete. If you're getting above 2 in the scores then you're in the top quartile of roguelike developers. That's brilliant!! :D

Yep, there's nothing to feel bad about in completing a game at all in 7 days, and particularly in getting scores above 2.0

Looking at many of the games that either weren't completed in time or didn't turn out so well, a fairly common flaw is over-extending. Too many good ideas for just one week. A lot of the best 7DRLs come from people who picked one thing they wanted to do, and then did that thing as well as they could.

This year, for example, take a look something like Golden Krone Hotel. Fairly standard roguelike in many ways but with a couple of distinctive things added, and refined as much as possible the time available. There's nothing wrong with being more ambitious if you can pull it off, but equally there's nothing wrong with keeping your goals modest and making sure you execute them well.

^Yup. That's what I mean by far less innovative (that's my game). I was rather upset with my low RL score from last year, so I wanted to see how I could do with a traditional roguelike with a few things tacked on. I'm getting good feedback so far, but score isn't everything. As has been said many times, the games that get talked about after the dust settles don't always get high scores.

Well you could help out with reviewing instead of moaning about not having a review :-P

Ah, that's yours? It's a good game, excellent work. Which one was yours last year? I played a fair few of those too (though I wasn't reviewing last year).

Thanks. Last year I did "A False Saint, An Honest Rogue", which was a wilderness survival game. It had no combat, but in most other cases was pretty roguelike.

I guess I will have to find time to do just that.

Ah yes, I actually only played that for the first time recently. Interesting idea and I need to spend more time with it. I've heard/seen several people speak very highly of it.

Last year I made an ecological simulation.  This year I made a roguelike.  It is amazing how much easier the roguelike game was to develop.

Yeah, but I didn't feel rushed at all - I actually felt like there was a lot more that I could have done that I didn't do just because I limited myself to what I'd had planned. Though maybe it's just because I don't have a day job that this felt so easy... :P
