looking for stargate RL
« on: January 30, 2014, 01:34:30 PM »
I have had a look for a stargate themed or based RL and thought that this would be the best place to ask. because all my searches have come up dry

There has yet to be one created at all as far as I know...same as Dune and many other classics that would probably thrive in the environ.

The annual 7DRL challenge is coming up - that seems like an ideal time for someone to make one.

That does sound like a cool idea. How to incorporate the theme with the mechanics?

Maybe you have a start screen or start room showing your Stargate, and you know the address of certain gates. You go and find more addresses to open even more gates until finally you open the gate to the location of, you guessed it, The Amulet of Yendor. Protected by some theme appropriate baddy, a Gah-Ool or something.

EDIT: Actually a 'gate' system instead of a straight dive sounds intriguing. The gates each are 'in range' or connect to certain others, but not to all, so your map of levels is not linear or anything else common, but rather a spider web of nodes...I might use that. Thanks for the idea Meow Meow.

I'll keep you in mind Meow. I do like the gate idea.

I've long thought that a stargate-themed game would be a good match for procudural generation, letting you visit an infinite number of different worlds that all look suspiciously like some part of British Columbia, each of which could have its own little self-contained mini-adventure with a basic randomised plot.

I was thinking lots of diverse areas with the main quest being to finally dial back home.

You would play one of the crew members of the Destiny. If you look at the cast there are plenty of archetypes to choose. Warrior, Medic, Scientist, Explorer etc...you would be the loan survivor, like Eli, after the show is cancelled. You dial out randomly just in time to save yourself.

Each stop can be used to get more gear/food or whatever, but even more interesting would be if you would need to find the 'key' or coordinates to the next gate somewhere in the area.

Or each gate has a couple of other gates in range but some of the crazier ones might be locked out so you need the key code. The 'crazier' ones could be more dangerous areas but with a higher chance of epic loots. They also might end up as dead ends.

Lots of things you can do with that premise.

IIRC someone made DuneRL for 7DRL a couple years ago, but didn't continue development after that (though I believe they intended to at the time).

I don't think it was much more than a walking-in-sand simulator but a Dune setting would probably work really well with bene gesserit and/or honoured matres as pseudo-spellcasters with some complexity of combat when you mix together futuristic ranged weapons and holtzman shields to force close combat.

Oh hell yeah, I love that. Turn on the shield and close combat is required, you can't shoot and cannot be shot.

Also you can use 'water' instead of 'food' as the clock for theme.

Dungeons can be Seiches. Seetches? Dunno how to spell it.

The Voice. The wierding (wording?) way. Water of life. All good things.

Get a Fremen stillsuit and not have to worry much about water anymore. Get a weirding module for sweet ranged combat and a worm tooth knife for maximum bump combat.

I like this a lot. I need to kill me so Harkonnen, Bene Geserit and Sardarkar assholes right naoh!

That would be cool, though my vision for it would be more SG-1/Atlantis-esqe, where you are not really limited in where you can go (although it'll be random what kind of world you go to until you find some gate addresses).  Each world would be it's own little randomly generated mini-adventure, but your over-arching goal is to form alliances and bring back technology, perhaps with an X-Com-like research strategy layer back at base for reverse-engineering alien tech.  When your character dies, you play as a replacement SG team member (or if you're unlucky, someone from Farscape), but if the earth gets invaded it's game over.

That does sound neat. Far more thematically strong. More than just a way to organize level sequence.
