Robot roguelike?
« on: November 20, 2013, 07:00:00 PM »
I just had this idea...

Is there a roguelike where you play a robot and you assemble yourself from different components before the game, and during the game you can mod yourself and have to replace the broken parts?

That's actually pretty cool. Different chips can contain skills. ...And perhaps you could have a battery level in addition to your health that will be drained dependent on which skills and hardware you use.

There was a "Scrap" 7DRL, a "Dungeoneers" game for PalmOS (although I think it was a vehicle, not a robot), and probably something else.

Also GearHead, where you can build your giant robot vehicle from many kinds of parts.

You definitely want to play Scrap. Description of play & link to the download site are here: http://www.roguetemple.com/reviews/scrap-10drl-11/

It takes a little while to figure out, but the systems are great.

Heat levels in different parts of the robot could be used to limit usage of stuff like firing lasers. It would literally be a cooldown system :)

CogMind! That was a 7DRL last year (from the developer of X@COM).

While I've yet to play Cogmind, I thoroughly enjoy the blog.

Thanks AgingMinotaur :)

For anyone who might not know, the new blog is for the souped up commercial version which is going to blow the 7DRL away (to be released some time in 2014), but you can still download the 7DRL version from the old blog here.

I see Cogmind was mentioned. Awesome.

If you think about it, adding pieces and taking them away is sort of the central character building mechanic of roguelikes and RPGs in general. Use ammo, lose hit points, add a sword. It's all about slots and stacks.

That's precisely how I approached it during the design process, since it really is mostly the same as equipping your average RL character. The primary deviation from the norm is that you can focus on each piece of equipment having its own HP. Most roguelikes don't go quite so far in terms of item durability, so that changes things up while still keeping a lot of the same gameplay intact. Then of course there's all the new options in terms of item types.

I did something like that for my 2013 7dRL, Attack the Geth. It's not entirely obvious, but that's what the "customize" option is, it lets you upgrade your robot.
