After playing and beating Volgarr the Viking...
« on: October 13, 2013, 11:03:15 AM »
...I gotta say, this is the best surprise hit in 2013!

I have clocked 5 hours as soon as I bought it's that fun.

The game gives a small amount but equally useful tools and the controls are stiff but very precise. You're main slash can be offensive as well as defensive, since you can walk backwards for a few moments to raise your shield. You can block with your shield by standing still or make a evasive roll to quickly get away from danger. You can't change direction during a jump except to perform a double jump. Throwing spears has a deliberate prolonged starting animation so you don't solely rely on it. Charge a spear to increase its power and range.

The game is very difficult and unforgiving but fair, you will repeat the levels over and over until you beat the boss but that's ok because...

...the strongest point of this game is the level design. The sheer variety of obstacles you will face on a single level alone will NOT feel repetitive for the 20th time you're retrying to beat the level. This is an action platformer. The action itself is accomplished because of the small but critical tools the game provides, the well crafted level design and because of the unique monsters.

Some monsters require a careful approach and require spears to deal with them, since they are stationary and careful.
Others require attention to the pattern since they also block and attack and others jump above your safety of your shield.

The weakest link in this game however, I would say, are the bosses with their slow and wide starting animations.

I'm curious what my fellow roguelike players think about this game.

Yeah, well.. it's a lot like old school platformers were. Boring, repetitive, difficult. I think young people never played those so anything can feel new (compared to typical AAA-games of course..).

Sounds like a modern version of the original Castlevania. Stiff but precise controls, slight delay on attack, well placed enemies that force you to slow down, even having enemies knock you back into bottomless pits. I'll check it out if I'm in the mood for some old school, controller throwing, learn by dying, nostalgic fun. Unless there's medusa heads. I hate those things.

Dunno about Castlevania, but the obvious copying of Rastan from the gameplay, sound and exact level design makes me wonder if they somehow own rights to the game. They also use the sound bit from Altered Beast if I'm not mistaken ('Rise Warrior'). If they do not own the rights I wonder how they get away with the copying without risk of lawsuit.

I'm pretty sure in Altered Beast the voice said "Rise from your grave"

Yeah. I was being silly. There are tons of elements copied but they are different enough, minor alterations.

Speaking of being silly,

    "POWER UP"

Sorry, I rarely get to do that without getting confused stares.

Okay I played this one. It has what I like in a sidescroller, it doesn't over due the platforming and has tons of action sequences that are actually puzzles. Nice.

This is what I am afraid. People will ditch this game thinking "oh wait, another platformer" when it has a great deal of action for you to slash through.
