Vicous Orcs. I love the shout function in Jeff Lait's Vicious Orcs and Smart Kobolds. At random intervals, avatars on the screen get a speech bubble that hovers over their position for a few turns/seconds. Lait uses them very effectively to convey the feeling of the scenery (kobolds taunting you, even after you are dead, etc). Vicous Orcs also have differently colored levels, which is a nice and affordable trick to paint the scenery a little.

Smart Kobolds and Sword in Hand...
Those trinkets on the ground, man.
Swords, gold, food, dolls. They all bring the world alive.
You can't pick anything up so the gameplay purpose they serve is NOTHING, but the sheer flavor they add is so good. I might try to play some Incursion in the near future, see if I can come across an inspiring landscape.

Hmm, now you mention it I really do like the look of Jason Pickering's games.  I get bored of a lot of other pixel art games, but his are nicely abstract and simple.  Also the little animations go a long way to making them looking nicer.  Probably helps that I enjoy his games too  ;)

Good call there. He really has his style down. You can tell his games at a glance. Very cool.

For tiles/graphics, I would say DoomRL, Dredmor, and Sword of the stars: The Pit. Teleglitch has a nice graphical charm to it as well.

I really like Slimmy LichMummy for it's simplistic yet attractive tiles.

For ASCII, I would say Infra Arcana, Incursion, and Brogue.

Infra Arcana is definitely my favorite due to the lighting system with the ascii , health bars, the grime on some of the wall tiles. It's very impressive for ascii. It manages to evoke a heavy sense of atmosphere with ascii which is very impressive to me.

Incursion is quite nice as well, and Brogue is simply pretty. :p

Frozen Depths has rather nice ascii as well.

Hey Legend you don't play Infra with Oryx's mono color tiles?

You prefer the ASCII?

Yeah, I prefer ASCII. I do think the tiles look cool, but I just can't play with them. They're too small and hard for me to see and identify things on the screen. Even the ascii is a little tought for me to see on the latest version since there is no more fullscreen as in previous versions.

In the pre-1.4 versions, I would play fullscreen with 8x12 font and be able to see everything awesomely. Wish I could still play that way.  :'(

Playing with the tiles is just too much of a strain on my eyes.

ToME or Crawl. ToME for sheer variety, Crawl for that sense of well-crafted identifiability - you see a goblin and you instantly know what it is.

Infra Arcana.

DCSS and Slimy LichMummy are also ok.
What I enjoy the most in roguelikes: Anti-Farming and Mac Givering my way out. Kind of what I also enjoy in life.

The only thing with Dredmore is I have trouble knowing where things are on the grid. It's an angle issue.

Brogue is a beauty.

When it comes to tiles I prefer DCSS.

I'm not a huge fan of tiles in roguelikes. I think some of the Dwarf Fortress tilesets are by far the best I've seen.
