Spam question
« on: January 24, 2013, 01:48:18 PM »
Why other forums don't get spam and this one does? What's the story.

They get it too. However, here and in the incubator Brian has no moderator rights and thus cannot exterminate spam on sight. So it boils down to visits of Slash who purges these subboards. Good point, actually. I mailed Slash about the issue. Things should get resolved soon.

No. Is spam protection good enough here?

Aye, I don't see spam at all on any other smf forum I frequent.

Which does not mean it does not exist. I have reported merely three or four such posts during a few months so my information likely is outdated.

Most sites have an individualised question to prevent spambots getting through.  For instance on the ToME forums we have the question "What is the name of the class in ToME4 that starts with a golem companion?"  We've had no active spambots since implementing that question many months back.

Alas, it's hard to think of a similarly universally known question for here.

Slash, if you need an extra hand to help clean up spambots I'd be very happy to help as janitor.

  I have some questions.

How many exclamation points are in the title Sun Crusher!!!   ;)

  Better would be these:

What was the first game in the Roguelike genre?

Who is the Forum Master and also played lead guitar for Guns & Roses?

Complete this phrase, The Amulet of ______

  In Nethack you:
    A) Break blocks, collect coins and kill Bowser.
    B) Pwn noobs with mad skillz.
    C) Ascend, if you read spoilers.
    D) Grind XP with your party using teamspeak.

I could go on and on.

I'll give you 50 if you want.

This is a terrible question, since the answer could be a variety of games.

Well for one a lot of people would put rogue, but it is missing so many of the qualities roguelikes have.  It is the games which came after rogue on which we base all our ideas of the definition of a roguelike (yes, the term roguelike is a misnomer: deal with it!).  Those are the first roguelikes.  Is rogue a roguelike retrospectively?  Yes, but it wasn't the first, and that may be a philosophical distinction I choose to make.  I honestly don't know which roguelike came first, so I can't even answer the question.  Hack?  If you want to say rogue is the first roguelike, you should probably say DnD is the first roguelike, and I'm sure there are more and better candidates out there.

Yep, that's what we are using on roguebasin; unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a ready to use plugin for SMF which does the same as QuestyCaptcha... maybe someone's up to look it up or contribute it?

Thanks, I think getter's doing a good job at it and me myself sometimes kill one or two when bored... but I'll let you know if we need your axe!

It is on smf natively.  Admin -> configuration -> security and moderation -> anti-spam -> verification questions.  You may need to upgrade to smf 2 though, I've never used version 1.

Yep, this is a SMF 2 feature I'm afraid... and I haven't considered upgrading to SMF 2 so far since it seems to require a bit of careful handling... may be now it's time to finally do it
