Funding ToTRL to remove google ads at the bottom of our logo
« on: January 12, 2013, 01:28:45 AM »
Hi Slash,

This is not a critique against you, we are all grateful to you for keeping up this awesome forum and having paid for the hosting through all these years, but if there was a way to get rid of the google ad you put at the bottom of the logo that would be great. I am not asking how much you receive from them or how much you need annually to mantain the website, just an amount of donations you would consider enough in order to remove it for 12 months.

This is because - at least for me - all those targeted ads constantly remind me about other part of my life whenever I enter the forum or open a thread.. and one reason why I love roguelike is the possibility they give me to abstract myself separating from everything else and just immerse myself in that reality.. having to see ads of tennis equipment and asian dating websites deconcentrate me and removes part of the pleasure I had browsing this forum.

I understand this request is a bit weird, let me know what you think.

What I enjoy the most in roguelikes: Anti-Farming and Mac Givering my way out. Kind of what I also enjoy in life.

If you would like to be rid of the tracking cookies that give you targeted ads instead of blocking all advertisements, you can clear your cookies and set your browser to stop accepting 3rd-party cookies. I don’t know whether this will do the job completely, as cookies are not the only way you can be tracked, but it could help.

“I want to block ALL the ads, Fenrir.”

There are ad-blocking extensions for all the major browsers.

http://adblockplus.org/ [Firefox and Google Chrome]
http://safariadblock.com/ [Safari]
http://simple-adblock.com/ [Internet Explorer]

If memory serves, Opera provides a content filter that you can use to block ads.

For browsers without ad-blocking extensions, you can use a filtering proxy like Privoxy (which is what I use) or you can modify your HOSTS file. Here is a list of ad servers that can be used for both purposes: http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/

Either way, no more tennis dating or Asian equipment.

Hey Skeletor,

Thanks for the heads up, I see you have solved your problem already via an ad blocker, but I'll give a thought about removing the ad and placing a simple donation system.

The thing is paypal isn't very friendly with we Colombians, so it brings some complexity, but I need to get around that anyway.

Consider an annual donation drive like what wikipedia does.  A lot of people wouldn't consider clicking a donate button that was always around, but if there was an event describing how much is needed and talking about the traffic etc that the site brings, I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to raise the funds.

I would very happily donate towards RogueTemple.  I have the ads turned off, but they still appear on my phone, and annoyingly it's easier to misclick on them there.  But in general this is a worthy site to donate towards.

Yes, please do it when you have some time as I am sure many of us would be keen to contribute.

I agree with kraflab about considering an annual donation like wikipedia rather than a donate button that is always around.
