2013 in Roguelikeyness
« on: January 03, 2013, 10:24:39 AM »
Cross-posting from the mostly dead RGRD...

Alas, 2012 did not turn out to be the year when Shockfrost released his ultimate roguelike, which in turn triggered a Mayan apocalypse.  But with the resurrection of ADOM (including a $90k crowd-funding campaign), version 1.0 of Tales of Maj'Eyal, the massively popular FTL and tiled versions of both DoomRL and Brogue it's been a pretty nice year overall for roguelikes.

But a new year dawns and the celebrations of the past are replaced by the hopes for the future...  So, what's everyone planning for 2013?

My own plans:
 - Finally finish Rogue Rage, my failed 7DRL from last year
 - Make a cool new 7DRL that totally won't be overambitious and doomed from the start  ;)
 - Port some old games to the T-Engine and update some of my existing T-Engine games
 - Make something beautiful that uses procedural content in new ways
 - Play more roguelikes
 - Do more writing for ToME and associated expansions

Also, any volunteers to host IRDC this year?  I had a lot of fun hosting it in London in 2012, but I think we should keep up the tradition of holding it somewhere new every year.

I'm planning to keep on slowly working on my own roguelike, maybe learning something new about coding in the process. Definitely going to try and learn to use curses in addition to tinkering with Qt.

It would be nice to play more other roguelikes than Nethack.

I should email to other developers more often and say "that's really cool game, I liked playing it."

- Teemu 1.3 which is going to be more complex than the previous version
- Playable demo of Kaduria (maybe a restricted area of dungeon)

Encircled (my tactical-positioning/puzzle roguelike) will develop graphical prettiness, customisability, and a much more gentle tutorial that blows the player's mind with a thousand incisions rather than two shotgun blasts. And it'll change name to Surrounded.

Well I hope I can pump out the first beta of my re-born project this year. During the language switch there were some changes made to the concept, and I'm currently up to my eyeballs in coding them in.

As someone who has received such emails, I must say that they mean a lot, so don't hold back if you find a game you enjoy :)

For myself, I plan on starting and finishing a new roguelike, with maybe an expansion to Epilogue at some point down the road.

I would love to say concentrate on developing my game, but I can see other little things getting in the way. Or more specifically, a tiny little thing that will probably throw up everywhere.

In the meantime I've decided to put together my own response to the ROTY poll, which basically involves me playing - and reviewing - all the roguelikes that did about as well as mine did (which wasn't very well, but I was incredibly delighted with how many votes the game received).

I'm having a lot of fun* with Rogue's Tale at the minute (played and written up / scheduled this, PRIME and Steam Marines so far). I'd love to carry on through all 283, but I think that might be pushing things for one year.

Check it out, or if not, check out some of the games that came near you in the poll! Spread some love!

I just want to keep working on my own roguelike as well. I don't even know if I'll be making a 7DRL this year unless I finish the roguelike I'm working on at the moment. I can't stand having multiple projects going on at once.

Oh, hey! Developers just love such initiatives. Then I'll let you know that PRIME has new release planned mid January. You may wish to delay on it a bit since on Windows current version crashes on exit. You need to re-run the game every death, too. :-( Fixing this is on the way.

For @Star Wars, I'd like to push for a decent-sized release every month. Beyond that, I'm getting close to "finishing" the core game mechanics, so I'm looking forward to doing more work on content development and the like.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll make sure I hold fire on the PRIME thing until after the release :).

You may wish to delay on it a bit since on Windows current version crashes on exit.

This happened in ADOM too, and was caused by a bug in NotEye ("endwin" is called to finalize Curses in noteye_halt, even though it is not initialized at all in graphical mode). I am not sure whether this is already fixed in the current official release.

I think 2013 belongs to ToME4 and the T-Engine :)

I'll be spending the first part of 2013 writing a novel.

I always thought I had the talent for it, but getting started in writing in one of these weirdly difficult things to do. Ask anyone that's done it, mental blocks are huge.

I plan on competing, for the 4th time, in the 7DRL. I'm kicking around making a sequel to Gunfist using the Sun Crusher engine. The graphics and engine are already there, so it should come together smoothly in 7 days. Right? RIGHT!
