(7DRL) SUN CRUSHER!

  SUCCESS!!!

NEW UPLOAD!

http://www.sendspace.com/file/0x11ts

This is my entry in this year's 7DRL.

It's a space game. It includes stellar terrain that rotates, 4 different player ships, 3 enemies, 10 levels and 1 boss. If it's too hard lemme know. I'll up the shield strengths.

Making this game was an immense amount of fun. I'd nearly quit programming altogether before this, focusing mainly on writing fiction and card games. This brought the bug back. Bad.

I don't think I'll be anywhere near the top of the competition, but the game is complete and fun. It's exactly what I set out to do but it turns out things worked better in my head than in practice. For example rotating planets on a grid in a turn based fashion just looks wonky.

The makers of Space Empires IV at Malfador Machinations get credit for the graphics. The ships are from fan mods of the game.

Hints: The Scout is for experts. You can blow up gas clouds with your particle cannons. Solar systems revolve clockwise. Sun Crushers can be detonated in space by right clicking a second time, they take out planets and stars but leave asteroids and gas clouds.

Grah! I should make a special ending for anyone that beats the game with the freakin' scout ship. I can win with the other ships if I'm careful enough.

I will make a special ending for anyone that beats this with the scout. Just take a screen shot of level 10 will be good enough. Press F9 to make a screen shot.

We'll call it the Darren Grey ending (supposedly he's a roguelike elite player).

Thanks man. I'll be getting into another digital roguelike as soon as I get Cardlike 2.0 produced. It's just sitting there, a finished concept but with about 20 hours of grunt work typing up the cards and cutting and pasting the graphics.

I just noticed a glitch in the above build. When you beat the game the music is supposed to change. It didn't. I'll fix it now.

EDIT: Fixed above. Minor glitch.

I find the game quite enjoyable! It's a lot of fun. The graphics make it very awesome for a Trekkie. ;D

Thanks Lambda...then you'll like the 'boss' on level 10 I think...or maybe not. I almost made it a Borg Cube...shit maybe I should change it...

I have to resist the urge to tinker with it over and over.

Hey, I did win with the Scout. Twice (no screenshot on the first try).

If I move 4 steps towards the warpgate, then I start the next level with 4 moves left. This is a big disadvantage for the Scout. I think the game should warn about this, or automatically fill the moves if the previous position was safe.

Some of the images are unclear (it is sometimes hard to see the planet with rings, or the small bunch of asteroids).

Congrats for a successful 7DRL!

Yeah the small asteroid cluster sucks. It's a 1/25 chance of coming up but it comes up all the time! Grah!

It's best to pass the turn as soon as you enter the wormhole...if I were to do a patch I'd pass the turn when you start a new system.

Lemme see if that causes more bugs...if it doesn't I"ll update. Thanks for the feedback.

EDIT: I'm putting up a 'props to z' ending in the next few minutes. Thank your for playing my game. I'll edit the download link soon.

EDIT2: I was able to reset the turn after going through the wormhole without obvious bugs and have put that build into the link above.

Thanks!  :)

Yeah, that solution is more logical (I have assumed that not resetting the turn was intentional, as it gives you a choice of escaping the current system quickly at a cost of being unprepared in the next one).

I think that the rotating planets look cool and they are a nice idea. Maybe it could be better with orbits and grids shown, though.

I have noticed that pressing e.g. Up and Right simultaneously while having 1 move left allows you to move diagonally (and have -1 move left).

You are correct that the re-upping of the turn was not tied to the wormhole for game play purposes. It adds a choice of going for the wormhole or waiting a turn and possibly getting shot. But it is a minor game play choice and works better when you reset each screen. Really the one cheap thing about the game is you can start off a screen with no guns left, no moves and no sun crushers to launch. That's kind lame now that i think of it.

The rotating planets was an idea I had from the very beginning and they don't come off well at all. Turn based revolution is just not that great. Real time and non grid based would have been better. But I had a concept and decided to go with it. Come hell or high water...I think it ended up okay. The planets sort of revolve in a diamond instead of a circle though. So that sucks.

All I can say is that I did what i planned to do. That doesn't mean what I planned to do came off all that great. :-)

Also I realized in the end that the 'roguelike' factor is not that high. There is permadeath but randomization does not add that much to the game. There are no pick ups either. So that's very un-roguelike.

Hopefully it has a small amount of fun factor though. With the explosions and sounds and what not. I tend to sun crush the star sometimes and open myself up to even more hits though.

I should have figure that people would be better at my game than I am. I haven't even gotten close to the last level with the Scout.

Hey Z I put a little note on the 'victory' screen about you. I can do more if you want...

I re-uploaded it. Thanks for the interest!

Remember the stats are actually on the window bar, didn't have time to put them on the screen.

Right click to fire the sun crusher! You have a couple and they blow up big.
