New versions of Hellband and Quickband
« on: June 11, 2012, 07:03:56 AM »
I just happened to notice that Elderlore is back up finally and was looking through the old news. Looks like both Hellband and Quickband have gotten updates recently.

Quickband

Haven't tried them yet, but they are the only *bands that interest me. Hopefully Ironband can get an update too. :)

Though I really wish they could be made to run in fullscreen console mode like angband 3.0.9b, the last version of Angband I remember before they switched to that fiddly window interface that I can't stand or figure out how to resize properly. :(

How old was this news, exactly?  ;D

Latest Hellband release is still 0.8.7, from 2009. (http://angband.oook.cz/variants.php)

As the author of Hellband, I can tell you there is no new release, there must have been an RSS glitch.

Lol. New, old, no matter. Both are pretty neat.

Hey Legend you might check out SIL as well. I messed around with it a bit and thought it showed early promise.

I've been checking out Infra Arcana on your recommendation. I have too many games, probably never end up playing them all.

Decided to give it a try.

Not fond of all the separate windows and the fonts are too small on the inventory/equipment/roll windows for my poor eyesight. Would rather have one fullscreen screen that is divided into sections. I really wish Angband and it's variants would go back to using a console display at least as an option. Like doomrl, Infra Arcana, Frozen Depths, Unnethack, etc. Or at least a fullscreen window that is much easier to configure.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to play since it keeps crashing when I try to resize the windows. :(

A new version of Sil is generally inbound sooner than later from what I gather, so perhaps it will offer up fixes as well as more UI wranglings.

Yeah, Elderlore has the occasional feed glitch, I've gotten excited too at times only to read further and have an "Oh...." moment.

New Hellband sure would be nice though!  Same for Furyband coming back seeing how ToME 4 has resurrected so successfully from ToME 2 and it would appear they used to play quite well of each other.    8)

Very sorry about this, known bug (but not yet fixed). However there's an easy workaround: resize the windows (you can also change the fonts as well as window contents) after you've started a character. The crash only happens at the main menu (and perhaps the very start of character creation). After you've done it once the game will remember your preferences.
