Diablo III - Permadeath Mode
« on: March 24, 2012, 06:45:02 PM »
Does anyone know if Diablo III is coming with a 'hardcore' mode? Regardless, does anyone plan to play with permadeath anyway? I do. At least for awhile. I might be persuaded to have an immortal character to level with my friends. But mostly I plan to play 'hardcore'.

Does anyone plan to play DiabloIII?

I should note that after the 7DRL I have taken a week away from roguelikes to play some World of Warcraft. It was so boring though I started a new character...with permadeath. I also started a vegan pacifist. I'm on Malfurian if anyone cares. Conducts are becoming very common. I know at least one other pacifist and there are several doing 'ironman' challenges.

I fully expect Diablo 3 to be fun yet somewhat disappointing.

I've already purchased it.

It will have hardcore, it's apparently in the beta.

No. I guess it's a hack 'n slash action "role-playing" game. Boring.

No. It was fun to play Diablo. It was fun to play Diablo II, when we were tired of Quake III. And now it will be fun to make fun of Diablo III :). If they don't surprise us with something totally different from the teasers that we've seen so far, it will be more like a disco with monsters. Blizzard surely knows how to make money, but they don't know how to make games any more.

I'm far more interested in the upcoming Torchlight 2.

Why? Torchlight 1 was even less interesting than diablo IMO.

Also likely not even bothering with DIII---just doesn't seem like there's going to be much to it.  Besides, given Torchlight II, yet more robust updates for Triangle Wizard and other hopefuls likes Treachery, Grim Dawn, and even more esoteric things like Krater there just doesn't seem to be a real hook. If I HAD to deal with an online only ARPG thing in this style----hands down the better choice is the generally Indie Path of Exile that is also very nearly due for release.  None of the pay to win nonsense Blizzard is throwing out there, just cosmetics and such.

Good points all. I do not expect it to be a good game. Or at least any different than the first 2.

What I will be able to do is bang out dungeons with my friends. Which is about the only interesting thing this game seems to have going for it.

I think we should note here that Diablo I was not made by Blizzard itself either (IIRC they have bought the company and renamed them to Blizzard North). I think that they did make Warcraft and Starcraft, on the other hand.

Is Starcraft II also bad? I have tried Warcraft III and it sucked, Starcraft II seems to be done correctly, but I have not tried it.

Key folk from the original Diablo are now on the Torchlight side of things, though I don't know precisely where everybody went or even those still not in the industry.

I can report from experience that if you want to get Diablo 3 on the basis of hardcore alone...

don't.

I'm playing normally and I've been killed by lag several times. Since you have no choice about online play, it kinda breaks the whole point of playing hardcore.

Still having fun with it though. I've got my nitpicks, but the mindless killing and looting is still there.
