So many cheeses, so little time...(Dungeons of Dredmor)
« on: July 14, 2011, 03:00:21 PM »
I don't know about anyone else, but I've been pounding 'Dredmor' all day and thus far I'm really enjoying it.
Am I right in thinking this is the first commercial RL?

I'm anxious to hear other peoples opinions on the game and RL's 'going commercial'.
Myself, I'm finding it subject to serious 'one more game' factor and was pleasantly surprised that it isn't overly RL-lite, with the addition of the increasingly ubiquitous crafting balancing out some of the more simplified mechanics.

Hopefully it is a long game, but usually the lighter RL's tend not to be.

Thankyou,

Crunch

Rogue was released commercially, there have been a few Western (mostly forgettable) roguelikes released for the PC over the years, and of course there's been the plethora of Japanese roguelikes released commercially.  However I think Dredmor may be considered the first modern indie roguelike to be commercially released.  What do I think about that?  Great, I say, especially when it's such a low price.  Obviously I'd prefer a free non-graphical version, but it's cool to see people trying to extend a game with pure roguelike mechanics to the masses.  Go Dredmor!  :)

Not actually played it yet - I was hoping to get the chance this weekend, but now b29 of ToME4 has been released and I promised myself I'd make a new game once that happened...  Too many roguelikes, not enough time  ;)

Thanks, Darren, i hope, when you get around to it, that you are not disappointed.

It's a good game...it doesn't have the farm-charm of Angband or the depth of Crawl, but it's worth your time.

Thankyou for your feedback.
I first got into RL's after finding Moria on a disk on my old man's 386.

Dredmor is a fine game, imho, well...it's not gonna stop me playing Angband, or learning 'Crawl but I'm happy that RL's are getting represented by a commercial game.

Yep, it is a thing holding much quality and promise---seemingly being among the first to conquer the "Western Retail Roguelike Curse" that claimed such victims as Valhalla/Ragnarok and the utterly depressing loss of potential that was the Jaunt Trooper series.

Well, it's not so brave as 'crawl', but Dredmor may just get a few more people playing this genre we love.
The games you mentioned, Getter, are alien to me but maybe, just maybe Dredmor may just get people playing Angband, Crawl and TOME, to mention just what i play...Though it's mostly Angband ;)
I'm a hopeless farmer :D

I think, i hope, the curse is broken...failing that, i'm gonna buy this game for my buds :)

Thanks, Getter,

Played a little bit.  It's fun, and I really like the unity of graphical style, flavourful text and fun acoustics.  A nicely polished package.  I also like that it's unashamedly a roguelike, and while it offers softer options it doesn't pretend to just be an RPG and actively encourages the fun elements of roguelikes (like permadeath and replayability).  However I am finding it to be a little lacking in randomness so far - perhaps later on it gets better.  Also the weapon skills are all very samey, which is a little disappointing when the magic schools are so varied and interesting.  Hard to tell so far how much "depth" the game has compared with the classic roguelike greats.

Given this is the current mood and attitude, I expect more meat to arrive on the bones/ wheels of cheese to roll out in due time.  Considering this to be the foundation, the basement on up should be in excellent straits.

Been playing a bit and it is a very cool game. I have a few nit picks about the ui and features, but overall it's very fun and I love the humor and references. I like the crafting system too. Seems like i was pretty much taken straight out of minecraft though.

I wish there was a way to close doors, there was a button to click on with the mouse to wait instead of only being able to press "space" to do so, a way to scroll through the areas you have explored, and wish there would be a highlited area in areas that are blocked by walls, but you can still move there like hallways. Would be nice if there were a few more varied types of skills. The tutorial also left out a couple things.

Very cool that the games is going for a measly $5. Kinda makes the upcoming commercial version of Desktop Dungeons for $10-$20 seem a little over-priced.

They get extra bonus points of steel for having Manowar references in the game.
