Roguelike Round-up
« on: June 30, 2011, 11:09:16 PM »
I've started a new monthly article called "Roguelike Round-up".  It's a successor of sorts to Slash's old Release Wire - rounding up lists of all games released or updated that month, but also adding in some general news and events and briefly noting what's upcoming in the month.  I've posted an article for June here.

This is a first post, and experimental.  It didn't take long to make, and I don't foresee any problems being able to quickly knock together like articles at the end of every month.  But if you have ideas on how you'd like it changed, please let me know.  I'd like it to be useful and informative to others in the roguelike scene (as I always found the Release Wire to be) so if I'm missing out important stuff then let me know!  Also feel free to post in the thread any time with info you think should be included in the next round-up.

Excellent article!

I think it inspires motivation and brings the community a bit closer. Something that will surely help newcomers to roguelikes (like me).

I didn't know about Annual Roguelike Releases and your article really motivated me to finish & polish my own roguelike (which is in early stages) until September.

Nicely done.  Only other thing that comes to mind at the moment would be a designation for "Roguelike tools/engines" as they wrangle themselves on along----things like RoguelikeGCS, Neon, this PYendor thingie that popped up on Roguebasin the other day, etc.

Also, for some reason it wouldn't let me post a comment saying as much to the article, as it took me to a white "enter CAPTCHA" screen yet none was to be found on either...

I had a look at the tools and none of them seemed to be in a usable state yet.  One other thing I didn't mention was the upcoming Crawl tourny and prospect of version 0.9 in August - I deliberately left those for next month.

I have the same problem with comments - in fact it seems to be a site-wide problem.  I'll have a look in the Wordpress settings to see if I can change anything, but I'm fairly sure I won't have the permissions.  (Edit: And indeed I don't.  I've messaged Slash about it - hopefully he'll bludgeon the problem away.)

Well done! :-)
What I enjoy the most in roguelikes: Anti-Farming and Mac Givering my way out. Kind of what I also enjoy in life.

Well done! But ...

* Goblin Camp 2.0 has not yet been released. The post you link to is just a declaration.

* You did not mention Warudo which had its release announced here in the Temple. http://roguetemple.com/forums/index.php?topic=1617.msg11985#msg11985

* You ignored Ignite. Also on this forum: http://roguetemple.com/forums/index.php?topic=1611.msg11879#msg11879

* Desktop Dungeons except being featured at E3 had an update on 2nd June. http://www.desktopdungeons.net/?p=47

If anything should be asked of your article it is to make it accurate. It seems like you do not have list of Actively Developing Roguelikes among your sources. A pity because it is older than all other places you mention save for USENET.

The Waradu post specifically states it "isn't an actual game yet" and the web-site says it's "just an engine test".  The Ignite post says it was released on 31/5/11 (yeah, harsh to have a cut-off on this first month, but there has to be a cut-off somewhere).  Desktop Dungeons seems to have been a graphics fix for the Mac release only - does that warrant listing?  Goblin Camp is my bad, but their post really does look like a release post  :/

Hrm, forgot about Michal's list when putting together the titles - very poor form on my part!  I'll be sure to make proper use of it in future.  (And I just noticed Ancient = Michał.  God, how dumb am I  :P)

Warudo has more content than several failed attempts from (currently down) Roguelike Graveyard. To name few examples Valengard and Realworld were such ... creations. Of course it may not yet deserve to be named a new roguelike but why not mention it as an upcoming game with a tech demo available for download.

Agreed about Ignite. I did not notice date in parentheses. My mistake here.

About Desktop Dungeons: yes, certainly! If I had a Mac I would be glad to find out. Especially after being annoyed by graphical glitches and not visiting DD website. You may of course flag update as a mere bug fix.

I pondered asking Slash to change my user name to my real name but I fear what various forum or database updates may do to "ł" and "ń". When RogueBasin had mediawiki upgrade Björn's name caused weird glitches and random page did not work.

I was going to reply sooner but instead got recursively sucked into article about Dwarf Fortress and then N900 where I was surprised to see BOSS listed. Oh well.

Your comments "Sigmund shall take much blood" are very entertaining. Thumbs up for slipping it into roguelike round-up. A well written article. There is nothing I could sniff at. Not even a typo.

You forgot Infra Arcana. It's a very interesting and fun roguelike being worked on. It's in the forums.

Now that is a bit weird. Darren has Kharne Alpha 23 listed which I failed to notice was released but has missed Infra Arcana 5 which in turn is in Actively Developing Roguelikes list at proper place.
