Standing Desk - Do you use one?
« on: March 08, 2013, 08:28:38 AM »
Having laid down so much during my protracted period of illness it seems I've developed a moderately severe tailbone injury. Sitting just hurts. So I'm putting together a standing desk, going to get it done tomorrow so that I can use  it for the 7DRL competition.

Do any of you guys use one? How do you like it?

I may pick up an ergonomic keyboard as well. Does anyone use one of those? I have used one in the past but found it annoying. Is it easy to adjust to?

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

I tried a couple of times, but it didn't work at all. I'm tired of sitting after 12 hours, but in case of standing it becomes five minutes and my back starts yelling "What are you doing man, are you crazy?". Standing desks are definitively not for me, but I've seen some people who work like that all the time.

I used to have one until it broke down, and found it pretty easy to adjust to. I did learn that I overused one hand for certain characters. So there certainly was an adjustment period.

Ergonomic or not, if you're getting a new keyboard, get it sooner rather than later, and practice with it. Using a netbook most of the time, when I use another keyboard it throws me off.

As for the desk, I wish I had one :P If your back starts to hurt, change your posture until it's more comfortable, like tilting your pelvis(forward and back, not side to side :P) and straightening your back. Try to get the monitor at eye level so you don't have to look down at it, too. (I have my desktop's monitor sitting on a box on my desk for this, and my netbook is sitting on a textbook)

Good chair is really important. It has to be sturdy and stiff. Typical cheap computer chairs have too weak construction.

The best keyboard for me is mechanical tenkeyless keytronic-style keyboard (tall keys). Without numpad it's narrower than typical keyboard and allows to keep the mouse closer to body which means less tension/twisting in forearm.

Well I wasn't able to get the standing desk thing going. But I've arranged pillows that force my posture to relieve pressure on my tail bone. Crap man, it's my tail bone! It' pretty hard not to sit on it when you sit!

Good call on the raising of the monitor.

Thanks for the keyboard recommends. I'll be getting one soon, but I'll do the 7DRL first.

What I really need to do is go work in a warehouse for a year, walking around all day, get my body back into motion.

I stuck my computer in from of my bed, so I'm generally reclining instead of sitting.

Why do you do this guys?
Just use a regular desk and, for your back, buy one of those traction bars you can put in the middle of a door frame.
Your back (+ biceps and shoulders) will strenghten a lot and back ache will go away forever.

The last 3 posts make no sense at all. Care to clarify?

Krice is asking for clarification of Hi's confusing computer/bed/desk sitting situation.

Skeletor is saying that instead of getting a stand up desk, you should buy a pull up bar.  He's saying that exercising with the pull up bar will solve your back problems, and then you can use a normal sit down desk with no problems.  Personally, I recommend getting a stand up desk and a pull up bar.

Pull up bar huh? Can't hurt. Not a magical solution though.

Heavy squats and lunges and walking miles and miles fixed my tail bone. Also I fixed my posture. A holistic approach.

I still want a standing desk though.
