Random Realms released (Win 7 release 009a)
« on: December 18, 2010, 11:17:50 PM »
Quote
hi, i've been developing this game over the last 4 years,
and i finally think it's ready for release.
I don't know of any bugs, but maybe you can find some!

Random Realms is a Roguelike dungeon crawler.
Fight your way through randomly generated levels,
to the throneroom of a terrible monster who has stolen
a great treasure from your people.

A big feature of Random Realms is that with each new game,
an entirely new host of creatures is generated.
Animals, undead, golems, oozes, plant-creatures, and intelligent
monsters,
with many power combinations, are created for each game.

All dungeon levels are randomly generated, and there are many types.

* Full Documentation Included

* Set Perma-Death On or Off at Game Start
* Full Magic System

youtube video showing the game:

this message on the programming forum : (dark basic, because that's
what i know)
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=178942&b=5

The gentleman IBOL whom can be contacted via the links above as well as an email in the readme text could use some feedback from any with the time to play, stomach for ASCII, and a PC incidentally modern enough to do so.   From what I can see in the video, this has a good assortment of meat on the bones and strikes as one that should be continued to iron out bugs, balance, add more to, and so on.

Edit for clarity*

Okay so I have been playing this game a bit. It's pretty good. I like the variety of rooms, the dungeons have a fun layout as well. The ability to set the difficulty is pretty cool but I'm not sure others will agree.
Treating food and arrows as a basic stat is interesting. I also like the little map on the bottom left. Having your inventory always visible is great and something the graphic version of Crawl has going for it as well.
In one of my sessions there was a door in a room that seemed to go nowhere. I also can't find the stairs in my current game though I've been through the entire dungeon.
The scrolling text that continues to move as you walk around so that eventually disappears can be distracting and I'm not quite sure what it adds. Neat feature just not sure what it adds.
If you were to add anything I'd say I want to be able to move faster. The game hangs a bit when I'm trying to move a long distance.
The leveling seems pretty cool. Upping the stats and secondary skills like stealth and disarm traps. My guess is there will be no character classes as one can customize characters as they level.
All in all it's a solid game. Congrats.

EDIT: My favorite feature is that before levels there is a screen telling you about the new enemy you are bound to meet in that level. This is needed because the enemies are not standard dungeon fair. For example on level one I fought Arixaglos, level 2 I fought some sort of B critter with a similarly strange name.

EDIT2: Not laptop friendly. Looks like you need the numlock keys to shoot arrows diagonally.

Yeah I had trouble logging on to that other site. I'll try again. My connection has been weird.

Hi, I didn't know this was here, but i'm really glad to see it, much thanks to getter77
 / brian.
I welcome any comments, and will try to improve the game based on them. There's already been a first update, and more things planned for the next. so...
for Jo's comments:
"setting difficulty" : glad you appreciate it.  i like a lot about roguelikes, but i really hate YASD, and how hard they tend to be. That turned me off. So i tried to give players new to the genre a few options so they could get into the game, while still offerering perma-death and legendary monsters and 30 levels to the seasoned roguelikers.
"can't find the exit" : there should always be one (or 3 on a maze level!) , and if the game didn't give you one, i apologize. worst case is, you quit the game, reload, and play a new level over again (if you're >50% health).
"scrolling text" : You're right, that is distracting. I like being able to see my old messages (if i missed them the first time) , but i can change the way in which they scroll (only when new msg added).
"move faster" : someone pointed out to me that i need a run feature. probably true. i can also allow the player to set (reduce) the delay between actions.
"character classes" : this is just flavor really, related to your attributes, skills, and magic use.
"laptop friendly" : sorry. currently, you can use the actual number keys at the top 1-8 as directional keys: 1=N, 2=NE, 3=E, 4=SE, etc. I suppose i could work out that roguelike standard. is it really yku/hl/bjn ? that seems so awkward to me (sorry)

but thank you so much for all your time and attention. the game will improve.

ps: what site did you have a hard time logging on to? anything to do with RR? was it the dark basic site?

Does anyone have problems actually running the game? I'm trying to use a Win7 PC and no matter the compatibility settings I always get a crash before the game starts. (I'll be able to name the exact error when I get back to my gaming computer, I believe it has something to do with a missing file.)
2012 7DRL Challenge blind-runs!
2013 7DRL Challenge blind-runs too!
I do roguelike LPs, usually blind. I'm always looking for criticism!

Damn, it got you too eh GH?  Last I messaged the dev on it, though this was awhile back, his guess was that it had something to do with one of the various Windows Updates breaking something with the game and it needed ferreting out still---doubly troublesome that he had another advanced Roguelike in the works and Real Life to contend with.

I recommend contacting the dev with the exact message and whatnot and see what comes of it---as I guess it is also possible that some other woe is afflicting you that results in the exact same behavior on my end.  His other game for the last 7DRL competition shares exactly the same fate on my own Win7 PC...so if it is an update thing it must be something since the competition took place as people were able to get that working at the time to judge it and whatnot.

Makes senses in part I suppose----slim to no other Roguelike has tried to break ground in terms of the Random Monster part, at the very least, as this one has.  Recently somebody on Rephial was even contemplating such a mechanic for Angband within their current dev menagerie and I linked them to RR straight away.

His next project was, IIRC, aiming to be even bigger in the grand scheme of things, at least per the one video for it, though I can't recall if it would also inherit the monster mechanic or something else entirely.

I find it so odd that other than IBOL the only person I know of even remotely from the Roguelike scene on the whole involved over with Dark Basic, and maybe now AGK as I haven't checked in awhile, is David Gervais of classic tileset fame---Grail of the Gods on the Roguelike end and I believe a few other things.

Is this supposed to work on Windows 7 (64bit)? When I click the .exe I just get an error like "wrong parameter"...

That's the error I get as well, last theory I heard was somehow one of the Win 7 system updates managed to break something in the game that results in this as per the above mentions.
