I think everything should stay exactly the way it is, including the fact that only super awesome cool people can have avatars.

Agreed!

Guys, I have the impression the forum is dead since it lost its theme. Nobody posts anymore as before. One of the first posts in the Major Roguelikes room (one of the most active) was a question about Adom. After answering, I checked how long ago it was asked.. beginning of April, and nobody answered. Much different from before.
What I enjoy the most in roguelikes: Anti-Farming and Mac Givering my way out. Kind of what I also enjoy in life.

I think 7DRLs and other "roguelikes" makes this forum a mess. We should concentrate on the real thing. 7DRL people should go to that other forum, what was it, procedural games something.

The unfortunately thing Krice, is that you can't establish this as more than your personal preference - or a preference that anyone really stands behind, even if they believe it would better their experiencce.  After all, you could make your own purist roguelike forum and people would remain here, because that is where the impetus is.  And you reject Reddit, another place that shares the watering down approach this forum does, and is growing more popular.  So again, unfortunately, you only remaining option is to suck it up!

First I thought you were that mushroom guy, he is not nice. Let me just say that it's not my personal preference, because most if not all 7DRLs in actual are not roguelikes. And I do care about that as a player and a developer.

I hate the most developers who don't even try to reach major level in their roguelike projects. It's like.. it's just wrong.

Yes, those games are not like rogue.  Much like many of the "roguelikes" seen on popular gaming sites.  BUT the war is lost, the term roguelike is effectively inclusive of anything that anyone wants to claim is roguelike.  No matter how much you care about it, there is nothing you can do about it.

You can't get this forum to change it's rules to only allow games that are what are now named, traditional roguelikes.  Try it.  I guarantee it won't work.  And if you can't get it to happen here, one of the long term bastions of traditional roguelikes, then the chances of it happening in wider circles is improbable.

Even if you could get this forum to be only about traditional roguelikes, it'd be a waste of time.  It depends on who you talk to what a traditional roguelike is. Can it be non-turn based?  Does it have to be ASCII?  With just those two things, there's a number of anti-roguelite people who are bickering.

I'm not interested in futile battles.  Good luck!  But you'll probably be bemoaning the problem by yourself if you just complain about this change with no practical way to make a difference that has any reasonable level of support.

The interesting thing is that none of the 4 responses to your post mentions the theme. Whatever the real reason is, I'm afraid that little can be done to prevent it. The genre has ultimately transformed into a writhing mass of primal chaos (hello ADOM fans ;)). 10 years ago every deviation from traditional roguelikes could be called an innovation, but today it's just one big mess. No wonder that people are turning away from it. They are probably also bored with more traditional games as well.

Having said that, I'm getting back to development! :D
Fame (Untitled) - my game. Everything is a roguelike.

This is not a battle, because there is a relatively consistent idea of what a roguelike should be. I think we saw from the last 7DRL contest that people are getting bored and I guess no one played those games other than people who wanted to review them. I believe it was painful for them as well. Roguelikes are special type of genre, because there are not that many roguelikes and we really need new actual roguelikes to show what these games could be at their best. Of course my own project Kaduria is getting ready slowly and I hope it will honor the tradition of roguelikes but also bring something new to the genre.

I think 7DRLs and other "roguelikes" makes this forum a mess.

When I first joined this site I had similar thoughts (with exception of 7DRLs, this is just nonsense. Some might not be strictly RLs but it`s also a breeding ground for fully fledged ones, plus lots of fun). But the truth is roguelites can be very worthy games too, and I found out about many interesting ones through Announcements thread.

But, will they eventually kill the traditional RL? Quite possible. Not instantly, but by slow-drip death more like. Or maybe the RLs will kill themselves, afraid of the more popular imposters. Who knows...first they came for the ID & clocks (TOME)...and maybe the permadeath is next.

Apart from that, I don`t think this particular thing has much to do with this forum being supposedly "dead".

In what way? I know that a lot of modern "casual" players don't really care about deeper gaming experiences, but there are still a small group of people who do care. I feel that I'm in a lucky position as a game developer, because I don't have to care about what sells. I can design my games free of those expectations. When I'm thinking of a simplified commercial "rogue" lite, it's actually more like action games used to be in the 80's. One more reason to exclude them from roguelikes, but dumbasses keep adding them to roguebasin etc.

Back to topic, is there a list of things you miss from the old theme, so I can look forward to add them back if they are worth it??
