Ok, as the only stuff I could find was old and buried...

Anyone play this?

Is it possible to mod this?

I played it back when it was being developed.  Don't know about mods.

Even in its incomplete state, Incursion was a really impressive game.

What kind of shape is the newest version in?  Is it at least kind of stable?

We're talking about Julian Mensch's Incursion, yes? The newest version is the exact one he released a couple years ago before he went into his big code refactoring hullabaloo prior to officially declaring the project dead.
Having played it for ages I'd personally call it 60% stable. The more grievous crashes don't show up untill you hit deeper depths, barring completely random cases. (Like crashing to desktop because you suddenly hear a spell on the other side of the dungeon)

This was my favorite roguelike, but being unstable, dead, and filled with feats/skills/prestige classes that are unimplemented has dampened my enthusiasm. That and, you know, crashing to desktop with 95% certainty on any action while being just at the final encounter.

I wish it was open source so someone could at least remove all the feats/skills/prestige classes that have a big fat [UNIMPLEMENTED] on them in-game.

Ah who am I kidding, time to roll up another character.

Aye, the newest version has a datestamp of ... let me look... 5 years ago, nearly to the day.

I wish it was open source too. I could take a look at the code and try modding it. My skills aren't up to par with starting something from scratch, but I've successfully modded a few (non-roguelike) games.

Unless there is another d20/Underdark themed roguelike I don't know about?

Nope, Incursion remains pretty much one of a kind at this point in time.

Either he'll eventually do something more with it, somebody will somehow start hacking or reverse engineering it, or one or more persons will take a crack at something in the spirit of it and hopefully fare a bit better.   :-\

Incursion is a great tech demo of what a roguelike with lots of complexity could be like, but if you play it don't put too much heart and soul into your characters :D

One of my favorite little things is that you get the same xp for sneaking around a monster as you would for fighting it. It's one of the few roguelikes where being a rogue isn't a handicap!

That's sad news.

(Ok, I've started a thread in development for my idea, as modding Incursion seems impossible, any help or pointers?)

He's ruled out releasing the source, but it's a pity there's no-one he knows and trusts who can make bug fixes to the last release for him.  If anyone's got his ear, that might be an approach to whisper in it.

Yes and no.

One problem is that it has been designed to be moddable, it's just that Julian has not released the custom tools.  This means that the game data is written in a custom language which he wrote, and to reverse engineer his game, you'd need to reverse engineer his tools before you could get to the actual data encoded in his custom language (or make your own tools to alter his mods/create new ones).  It's another level of complexity/abstraction.

A better approach, and likely much quicker, would be to have someone manually extract all the game data (races, map generation rules, etc) from just visual observation from playing the game.  Then they, or other interested parties, would take that game data and reimplement the game.

Races, feats and the like are easy to get and note down from just playing or reading the manual.

I love the map generator, though.

That's the real pity.

Ok, I have a problem with Incursion.

I read a lot about this roguelike and I want to play for long time. But unfortunately I cannot. Incursionnot working properly. The first thing that's happens is communique in game's window.
It reads as follows:
"The screen resolution or window size you have selected in the option manager could not be set on your current hardware. As a result, the highest available resolution supported by Incursion was used instead. This may have also caused the font size to default back to 8x8, if whatever font size you have selected was too large to fit 80x48 characters into the available resolution.
To change the full screen resolution, window size and font size, select "Change system options" from the startup menu, navigate to the Output Options option group and set the options at the bottom of the screen accordingly."

Nextly it appears that the program does not refresh your screen. No matter what you do in menu/game - the screen does not change. Refreshes only when you move the Incursions' window.

I have followed the instructions on the screen and I changed the options. Mentioned warning not appears only if window size = 640x480 and font size = 8x8. Then the game screen refreshes normally. I wanted to check other settings however none of them works. Unfortunately, when I returned 640x480 + 8x8, the screen is not refreshed itself.

I wonder if you can somehow fix or force to work properly.
Do you have any ideas?

No idea.  It works for me.  I won't say works perfectly, as that would be an overstatement.

I routinely get that same error message but just ignore it and it still works after that for some reason. So that's of no help, sorry. If it makes you feel better, I'm going to play it now...

Ok, if I started to try fix my problems with Incursions, I started to play with options ;)

I discovered that Incursion cannot refresh only in window mode - in full screen the game refreshes normally. Unfortunately, there are other problems - especially in full screen. All screen is greenish/yellowish. Rarely, when options were changed, screen of dungeon gets greyish. Toggle "monochromatism" option doesn't change anything.
