Rogue's Eye - 7DRL Success
« on: March 18, 2013, 10:53:30 PM »
Now I've had a day to recuperate, time to pimp this here as well!

Rogue's Eye is my first 7DRL and I'm really happy with the way it turned out.  I actually think it's probably my best game, which is sort of depressing when you consider that it was made in a week while most of my games are multi-year projects...

Anyhoo, Rogue's Eye is a roguelike played from a first-person perspective a la Dungeon Master, Lands of Lore, Eye of the Beholder and several other flavours of nerd crack.  Other than that, I tried to focus on having a number of streamlined mechanics that complement one another.  Also, on letting you murder giant spiders by pelting them with bread rolls.

I also feel that my 7DRL is my best game ever. I think it's because it's so new I am still in the early "OMG this was a great idea" phase. I'm not yet into the, "OMG this is no longer compelling" phase.

  Lol.

I'll put up a quick review of your game in a bit over in the Not Yet Major section.

Yes, it should be (in fact you need the mouse to use the inventory).  What trouble are you having exactly?

If the trouble is with figuring out how to play the game (which admittedly could probably use some explanation), here's a quick how-to-play guide:

- Use the mouse to click the buttons on the right hand side of the screen.  The movement keys are hopefully self-explanatory, the hour-glass icon is wait.  Your inventory is above that - click on an item once to select it and three buttons that let you EQUIP/USE, THROW or DROP the item should appear.

- There are also keyboard shortcuts for movement - on the numpad 8, 4, 2, 6 move while 7 and 9 rotate.  WASD will also move you around and the arrow keys will move you forward and back and turn.  If I were not a moron I would have also made Q and E turn but I am and I didn't.

- You can only equip one item at a time and that item determines both your attack and defense in melee.  The stats are displayed below the inventory when a weapon is selected - A is the attack value (damage done when attacking) D is the defense value (damage absorbed when being attacked) and T is thrown damage.  (For non-weapon items, throwing damage is usually 1D3).

- Bump into enemies to attack, bump doors to open them, bump altars and fountains to use them etc.

- You can only attack enemies in front of you.  Likewise you can only defend from attacks from the front (i.e. if you're hit on the back and sides you take full damage).

- Potion colours are randomised.  To identify potions you'll need to either drink one or throw it at an enemy (which will apply its affects to them instead).

- The food clock works a bit differently to most roguelikes, in that you only regenerate health when you are 'full'.  Don't eat too much though or you'll start puking!

- The 3D view can take a bit of getting used to if you haven't played many Dungeon-Master-esque games before.  Take things slow at first and pay attention to your compass and map.

Hope that helps.  If there's anything else that seems obtuse let me know.  When I've sufficiently recovered from last week I might try and put together a 'game manual' of some kind.

It's working now dude, and everything is very much self explanatory. For some reason my mouse wasn't working when I first fired it up. I reset my comp and now it's good.

Nice game. This is one I'll have to play a bit in order to grasp the depths.

I can't seem to get this one to start.

I open the jar, and a small blank window appears for a split second, but then just sloses. No error message or anything.

I have the latest version of java installed. Running on win xp.

:(

Hi Legend,

That's unfortunate!  The only major requirement other than Java 6+ is OpenGL 2.0 - assuming your GPU will support it you could try making sure you've got the latest drivers installed.

If I think of anything else it could be I'll let you know.

I think opengl 2.0 might be the issue. My video card is mobile intel 945 express chipset family.  Can't figure out my version of open gl yet. Still trying to figure out if my card even supports opengl 2.0.
