Need help find a rougelike game
« on: October 03, 2008, 06:42:24 AM »
In everyones opinion which rouge game is the most advanced;dept, character custimization and challenge?  There are so many out there, I'm looking for one to stick with.

Also what can you folk tell me about Incursion--their website doesn't give much detail about the game.

Thanks

Challenge and  character customisation = Crawl (Stone soup) Go with it.

Incursion is a heavily d&d based game, it is fun but is really unstable.   Just try it, but it is nothing you will stick with though.
corremn's Roguelikes. To admit defeat is to blaspheme against the Emperor.  Warhammer 40000 the Roguelike

Incursion is pretty cool. There are a few wonky design choices (I'm really not a big fan of the inventory decision to be 'holding' an object, and forced to swap it with whatever you are equipping), but other than than it is quite cool. Character customization is immensely deep, with a really good implementation of the D&D3 (maybe 3.5?) ruleset. A few thing were changed to make them work in a roguelike, but they were good changes.

I have to admit to not being very good at it - it seems quite hard to me, and I have ascended a few characters in Nethack. I definitely applaud the creator - he has done a great job, and deserves a lot of credit.

As Corremn mentioned, Crawl Stone Soup is good too. I find it a little bit dried than most rogues (well, anything is after being tainted by Nethacks goofy gameplay). The playstyle is a little like Angband, in that it's more aimed at combat than anything else, and it does this really well.

Dwarf Fortress.  I hear it's pretty awesome after the month or so it takes to figure it out. :P

It depends on what kind of games you like. ToME 2 falls into all of the categories except mabe difficulty (if you are used to the genre and are a little bit spoiled) and it is a little but scummy like other bands. Nethack and Slashem are very deep and well made but character customization is lesser than some roguelikes. Powder is a shorter game but is AMAZING and has some balance.

Stone Soup has already been mentioned but as of right now i think it is the best roguelike that is currently being maintained. It is an extremely well-balanced game that you should enjoy for a long time. I have never had many crawl characters that didnt advance uniquely.

Also, there is adom but it is not being maintained.

edited 10102008 for content and a little bit o grammar.

I may post more here later but i am tired now.

Looks like I pressed quote instead of modify again. (or there is a bug somewhere, but I doubt it)

I was just going to modify my post about Incursion as it seemed a little harse, Incursion has great potential but is not there yet, unless you love dungeons and dragons.

DoomRL is challenging but falls down in the most advanced and custimization departments. IVAN has no customisation at all unless you call replacing your body parts with metal customisation.  Stone soup has some of he most varied gameplay from character to character.
