Zelda Classic for Roguelikes?
« on: February 19, 2012, 12:51:12 AM »
Has anyone had any experience with this?

It's an editor program geared toward making Zelda-likes. Looks pretty complete. I've gone through the scripting language a bit and it has a random integer creator and arrays and the whole nine. I was wondering if one could place randomize tiles or rooms with it at runtime. If you could do that you could create randomized level sections and what not. Could be interesting.

EDIT: There is an ad on this site that has been reported as malware. This causes warnings that the site is an attack site. It's not. But I wouldn't recommend clicking any of the ads....

Hmm, Trend blocked that site. I wonder why.

Trend? Is that like a bad website blocking program?

If I remember correctly this site was hijacked some years back and bad things were happening. This is a vague memory. It seems fine now. But better safe then sorry. I'll edit the original post with a warning.

EDIT: Actually it should be fine. I got the link from one of derek yu's articles on TIG.com. There was a version floating around with some malware in it. But the version from this website is fine.

EDIT2: here is Derek Yu, of Spelunky fame, talking about Zelda Classic.

Trend Internet security, virus scanner and fire wall, used in a lot of corporate places, and therefore I get it at home for free. The site must of been bad, as you said, once apon a time.

It also bans Krice's homepage too :) Which is probably justified  ::)

Ha! I've not been to Krice's page in awhile.

Hey Krice you still around? Still developing games?

the site is fine  and safe. There was report of the site showing suspicious script at one time for some reason and was down for a moment. They are still getting the database and downloads back up.

It appears that this website is no longer running suspicious scripts and that you can access the quests. Unfortunately, it looks like the FAQs and Downloads pages were wiped, as well as the tilesets for quests were reset.

Let us know if you find any additional problems on the forums or as a comment to this news post.

EDIT 5/15: It appears that the Downloads page is working again. However, I found that the comments for each quest have also been deleted.

I  used to fiddle with ZC myself for a while but never made a full fledged quest. Never got passed making a custom tile set with Link's Awakening sprites in nes color palette which is unfortunately lost now.

Here is another link to a forum for Zelda Classic

As far as something similar for roguelikes, I remember there being a roguelike creation program in dev that looks similar to zzt. Unfortunately I don't have a link but I think it's here in the forums somewhere. It's not complete though.
