It's getting pretty bad on Rogue Basin

The spam is growing ever more ambitious over there. In recent weeks there have been dozens of new fake accounts every day, and one in particular (Hari Seldon) has been injecting text into dozens of pages every day. It's all over the place now... anyone going to do anything about this?

Would it be at all possible to switch to manual approval for accounts, and enable any of the many long-term, trusted users to handle the approvals? The bots always find a way around other methods...

Looks to me like he was fixing categories on articles. Not too bad. I can't find any actual spam by the guy.

Hm, coulda sworn I looked back at what he was doing a couple days ago and saw spamish unrelated links being put on various pages. But right now the Basin is... down, so I can't even check. If not then my bad.

Either way, the other obviously random bots are getting pretty out of hand lately, and some have been creating ads as well.

Ok, Hari looks okay, apparently, but the other spam and dozen or more bots that sign up every day is still annoying.

Also, why the hell can't I access the Basin except through a proxy connection? It's happened occasionally in the past, but now it's been several days and I still can't get on normally. Anyone else every experienced this? I can tell that many people are still accessing it normally, why can't I...

I'm not a spammer, I promise! ::)

Yeah, there's something up with it for sure, but it apparently doesn't last forever. I couldn't access it for a week or so, then suddenly yesterday it started working again. It's intermittent, and intermittently annoying. And since it still works through a proxy, it would seem like it has something to do with ips.

Everyone team together and start HACKing, SLASHing and CASTing against spammers! We need to teach them a lessons that spammer is not welcome in our fantasy world. They need to be send back to what ever reality they came from!

How would these moderators know whether an account is a spambot until said account attempts to make an edit? At which point it's too late for moderation to have any effect - then it's just cleaning up after the spambots again!

(I guess we could require correspondence between the new user and the moderator, e.g. "send me an email before I approve your account")...
