My advice is if you want to write a game you should creat one that you will want to play.
Why? Because you will most likely be the only one playing it the most :)

The most popular roguelikes are ones where you descend a dungeon, pick something up from the bottom and go back to the top. Any variations on this is not really needed but just add flavour, e.g. branches, (random) overworld, multiple dungeons, multi-party, towns and real-time *shudder*.

I think all you really need to come up with is a theme, everything else is will come naturally.

Now ignoring everything I said, because this is what you really are asking, how about a roguelike based on post-apoc gunslinger/mutant/cyborg/psych game. Awesome.  Gunslinger are weak but kill from afar, mutants have all sorts of skills and mutations to get them far, cyborgs are strong but cannot heal, constantly needing repair/upgrades, and psychics are you magic class.  Not get coding :)  Now you need a random overworld, mostly desert with few towns, oasis, caves etc.
Most people are hostile because strangers are not to be trusted and resources are scarce. You walk around trying to befriend towns by doing quests, teaming up with the occasional NPC.  Of course you need a goal for the end game...

Now get coding ;)

Thank u for your answer.
hm.
dark future seems good, but it has some problems with, f.e. magic system(there aren't so many things to do in future world :D)
however, thx for your idea.

in my point of view, before coding i should understand what do i want from the future game :)

if speaking about dark future... i have an idea, truly)
the USA gets control of all over the world. it doesn't disdain to throw nuclear bombs. there is one state where people live normally. these people rule the world. others are in previous century: they don't have electricity, gas and live like savages.
so the main hero's aim is to break bad rules and f**k the USA president.

seems good?)

so i should say that i am asking not about the balance, but about the idea.

Where do people get such great ideas like this?

In the last 7DRL there was indeed a "Ron Paul saves the world" project  ;D
What I enjoy the most in roguelikes: Anti-Farming and Mac Givering my way out. Kind of what I also enjoy in life.

If you think back, it was only a matter of time before somebody did the opposite of Bad Dudes by Data East!

My wish: Make a roguelike that works without combat. Bribe, negotiate, sneak, tunnel - whatever you can - your way through the dungeon.

That would be pretty awesome. You could take that one out of the dungeon too, maybe it could be a randomly generated East Germany of the 1970s and you've got to get through the Wall.

Sounds fecking awesome.  I love the idea of a dark themed post-apocalyptic roguelike.  Maybe something with a feel of the movie 'Escape From New York', crossed with some of the atmosphere from the original Fallout.  If you want 'magic' then there is always the idea of mutations of a sort, or telekenesis, or simply just advanced use of technology (nanobots etc).

However I'd first say get a working basic game going and then start to shape into into your ideas for theme and setting.  You'll find you ideas change a lot over time, and actually making a working game will give you all the inspiration you need.

My ideas (any or all of them might be part of the same game or might be separate games, these are just ideas for now):
[*]Full source-code available under GNU GPL or compatible license
[*]Player characters and non player characters (monsters) are all treated in the same way by the program
[*]Select any kind of creatures (with sentient and non-unique) as your player character
[*]Make many different modes and scoring
[*]Bonus scoring for various kind of achievements
[*]Different kind of spell effect and different kind of item curse and other item effect
[*]You can learn to be good and avoid to kill someone else, instead you learn help someone and perhaps they won't kill you some more, or you can play in normal way instead if you prefer
    [*]Macros
[*]Trap makable from any spells, as well as non-magical traps
    [*]Anti-magic effects
    [*]Pushable objects
    [*]Explosive objects
    [/list]
