thanks alot for all the responses...  i kept meesing with xorg configuration and 915resolution but couldn't get it to look right...  i ended up removing ubuntu and installing debian.  first thing i did was try crawl in the x terminal and it looks great! 80x25 full screen and all the colors too, YAY!   thanks again!
