Off topic room removed and my thoughts on the Krice ban
« on: January 12, 2021, 06:00:29 AM »
There's two sides about Krice for which he was criticized.
1. One is him treating newbies like crap and making the forum unhospitable for them. Same treatment was given to well known devs or community members. To which I agree Krice should have been reprimanded long time ago - perhaps not exhiled, just temporary bans and reminded of basic rules to keep good vibes in the community. I also didn't like him in the beginning; had to learn to tolerate him with time - but have to admit he would make interesting interventions in the forum from time to time.
2. The other is Krice not alligning with the current politically correct globohomo trend in videogames, for which he has also received a fair degree of criticism by some. Well, that shouldn't be an issue in my book. He had his views, whatever. There's already enough politically correctness in videogames. Thing is, Krice genuinely liked roguelikes. Was just a bit autistic, there was no reason to remove the off-topic section altogether.
There were plenty of good threads on non-roguelike videogames and now they are all gone forever?

The actual trend in videogames is that some of us have been in this field for decades and we just want to talk about games without someone constantly insulting us or telling us we don't belong. It's exhausting.

The added bonus of not having horrid personalities stinking up the place is that it stops even worse people from setting up shop. The games industry has been cleaning house the past few years of its abusers and perverts. Good riddance. "Oh noes, we can't treat people like crap anymore!" Fantastic.

If Krice can write an essay saying how he understands what pain in the arse he was and how he will try to do better then maybe he deserves a reprieve.

But this post isn't it is it? It's saying that we should put up with more abuse and "get used to it". Suck it up.

If that's the attitude you're bringing then only the same attitude is warranted in return.

No, the point I'm making is that whether we can agree or disagree about kicking Krice out, let's make that decision being the consequence of Krice having been an asshole to users and NOT of him not having been woke enough. (and also let's get the off-topic section back)
The videogame industry is already woke / pozzed enough, and that is a result of it needing money to survive. Since with roguelikes there's usually less money involved, we don't need that shit here.

I removed Krice mostly because of #1 and how it impacted the growth of the forums. He was given enough warnings and caused enough damage thru the years.

As for #2, I have never asked anyone to be "politically correct", however, the rules have always been clear on acting respectfully and not discriminating against others which I believe Krice did many times to the point he felt pretty comfortable doing it here.

As for the off-topic forum, While I agree discussion about other genres of games would be a nice thing to have, I decided to disable them because discussion there easily deviated to non-game related issues which I frankly don't have the energy to moderate over (plus it was the favorite nesting place of the damn spambots). Maybe we could have a "Other Games" board, or at least experiment a bit on it.

Glad to hear him not being woke enough was not part of the reason he was banned.

Could we restore the off-topic room and keep it locked? As there were some pretty good old threads.

I have just checked Krice's post list and, after a quick perusal, I have found nothing really bad. Should I assume the worst posts have been removed?

Also, kudos for not letting wokeness be a factor. The web is already flooded by cancel culture authoritarians as it is.

I wish Krice the best, but when I saw the updated terms in the new section, I googled "was krice banned from temple of the roguelike," and this page was the first result. Like, mainstream Google, not the in-site search bar.

We gotta be nice to each other. There aren't a lot of us.
