Origin of the term - 'Roguelite'

I was watching a video on roguelites and the narrator mentioned that the Rogue Legacy team came up with the phrase 'Roguelite' first. He was so adamant of this fact that I just had to prove him wrong. Surely it was around before then?

Rogue Legacy came out around Mid 2013, and I cant find any references of roguelite before that :(

Other than http://www.roguebasin.com/index.php?title=RogueLite which unfortunately is a game by Citadel Studios, but came out in May 2008. Technically they came up with the phrase first, but used it as a noun  >:(.

Can anyone else find a earlier reference or did the team at Rogue Legacy really come up with it?

I think the game type was becoming more popular after 7DRL thing happened, then someone just had to invent a dumb term to describe those non-roguelike games.

Interesting. As a side note, it's my impression that most people would consider the Mystery Dungeon games proper roguelikes nowadays. So the terminology has shifted a bit over the years.

Same for FTL and the like.  Maybe we need a new term for roguelikes :)

Maybe we do. Surely it is useful for a developer to have a handful of catchy phrases to advertise their games. Now that 'roguelike' means next to nothing, it's getting really hard to explain in one sentence what your game is all about.

In my case that would be 'adomlike'. Do you like? :)

No, it's everything else that means next to nothing. All these roguelites or whatever they are. Roguelike is the standard where developers should set the goal. Today it's Nethack level game or actually more in terms of size and complexity.

It’s probably best to bite the bullet and acknowledge the state of affairs. One way to differentiate one self from the slew of action RLs is to specify something like «turn-based Roguelike» (Slash uses the term «classic RL»).

I hate that word.
"RogueLite"

It's like eating soy ice cream, or unsalted stale french fries.
It's a dead end, just grabs a few components of roguelikeness and puts them into some "indie" thing which is going to be left underdeveloped and does not offer any deep gameplay.

At least that's the feeling I get every time I read that a game is a "roguelite" ha.
What I enjoy the most in roguelikes: Anti-Farming and Mac Givering my way out. Kind of what I also enjoy in life.
