My 1st Rogulike inspired by Ultima4 and Castle Excelsior
« on: March 10, 2015, 01:38:42 PM »
I just started coding my 1st ever RL and also entered the 7DRL challange. Since I probably will not finish the game in 7 days, I decided to post it here instead of the 7DRL section. Entering the 7DRL will keep me motivated to work harder on the game though. I'm coding it using AGK2, so it should work on Windows and Mac right from the start. Since it's also my 1st project in AGK2 and I'm still learning the language, I assume getting a semi-complete version will take longer than 7 days. I hope it will turn out to be a fun game to play, especially for old school CRPG fans.

It looks like 'too early to show'. I very like Ultima (VII > IV, but 4th is a great game) and I think that will be awesome to port U4 to roguelike-world. But I'm worried that this can be too large project for first roguelike. I wish you luck!

Nifty, might try to shoot IBOL a message on it as he's the only other person I know of that has done projects in TGC's stable, though I don't know if his latest was in AGK or still using one of their earlier takes on it.

I disagree, and you shouldn't advise against devs showing what they're working on, regardless of what stage it's at. Showing what you're doing is the only way others will ever find out about projects that might interest them. Especially here, given that anyone in this small community is well aware of what early-stage WIP screenshots mean. Not to mention as a beginner showing bits of progress serves as a useful way to get feedback.

If you've got basic movement, doors, terrain placement, and collision working, you've got a good start. :D What're you tackling next?

Seconded. No such thing as too early to show. If it was a Kickstarter campaign or something, that would be a different matter, but it isn't. It's just someone sharing their progress.

I can't comment on whether the idea appeals to me since I've never played an Ultima game and a google of Castle Excelsior turns up nothing. I like the visual style though. Nostalgic.

Thank you guys for your comments. I appreciate your friendly feedback. I've done a basic overworld generator. Next I'll be working on town and dungeon placement.

It's random world generator, isn't? Very nice, I love that idea.

That world generator is already shaping up nicely. And those color choices are so old school :). Just make sure in the end the UI is easier to use than your average (read: terrible) old-school CRPG ;)
