ASCII Art Exhibition 2013

While it is better not to dwell on the nature of the shadowy corners of the internet by which I came to know of this even being a thing:

This year at the PLATINE – Cologne we are holding an Amiga Ascii Art Special Exhibition at the Zoo Schänke. In cooperation with Orkan Meydan we will compile these textmode-graphics from various artists and visualize them in a new way. By using various printing techniques we will transform these nostalgic artworks into the reality and introduce them to the public in individual ways – from letters to characters up to complete comic-stories and abstract wild-styles.

What are the roots of the Amiga-Ascii-Scene, what are these logos being used for, where do we still find areas of application these days? In cooperation with the Amiga-Ascii-Collective diViNE sTYLERs and the Amiga-Demogroup Up Rough, supported by the Portal aSCIIaRENA.com, Orkan Meydan presents a journey through the history of an almost forgotten, but by no means dead artform from its beginnings to the present.

Featuring 6 Artists from Germany, Sweden and Finland.

Whether anybody will bust out anything Roguelike derived is anybody's guess...or perhaps easily known if you can understand German and such given some of the info/bio's are in just that very language.

Some very cool stuff. This is a debate I have with my friends often - I think a nice screenshot of a classic ASCII roguelike does look much more like "art", as a single contained image, than a screenshot of many other games. I think it's because it does have the restrictions/limitations that many artists might impose on themselves, like a certain palette or a certain style or a certain material, whereas high-fidelity games don't really have "restrictions". ASCII games force you to think about aesthetics and design rather than just polygon count.

ANYWAY, I do think some ASCII screenshots can be very aesthetically pleasing in their own right; as you say it would be interesting to see if any get mentioned in the exhibition...

HyperRogue appears on this artistic website: http://www.p-ars.com/page9/page9.html

They also wanted to show something on an exhibition, but I do not know whether anything happened.

Dwarf Fortress is in the New York Museum of Modern Art. That's Unicode though... ;)

Minor correction: Dwarf Fortress is code page 437 (aka "IBM extended ASCII"). It's simply the character set of the original IBM PC.
That's a very popular ASCII extension, inside and outside of the roguelike world. It's the character set of most libtcod fonts, as well as an option for Nethack (called "IBMGraphics").
