micro-informatics rant
« on: March 31, 2011, 01:26:43 AM »
I was happily playing Dawn of War: Dark Crusade when my desktop suddenly shut down. I think the CPU's fried, because I tried to boot it using the built-in graphics card to no avail. It won't even beep at all. I removed everything, cleaned it thoroughly, applied some heat paste (whatever's that called), I would have applied some of that to the GPU too if it's little fan didn't seem so reticent to removing. Talking about removing, the CPU was almost *glued* to the heat sink! I hadn't removed it before so I was: well, I've unscrewed it and everything and it's still in place? wtf?

I'm  writing this on a laptop that's made from two identical laptops, both 6 years old. One had a fried motherboard and the other one had a crippled keyboard and a malfunctioning screen so I decided to fuse the two laptops together.

How the f*ck can my gaming computer, bought a year ago, give up its ghost this very night while *this* (my laptop) lovely piece of junk is still alive and kicking? Jeez. That CPU has a three year warranty!

My CPU also has a lock around socket you need to remove to get it off but I think you would have noticed it if yours had it.

Try booting the computer without RAM sticks. If CPUs are operable BIOS will beep out in frustration and damage is elsewhere. If not ... you have my sympathy.

Yeah, it had a lock and I knew XD it was the heatsink which was stuck to the CPU. I thought that was thermic stuff, not glue! :P
