LambdaRogue 1.6 released

Welcome to release 1.6 of LambdaRogue: The Book of Stars. This is the first major update since August 2009. The release fixes many bugs, improves balancing in late-midgame and endgame, includes new content and UI enhancements.

The following list includes the highlights of this release. See the changelog in the download archive for details.

  • new chapter which concludes the main storyline (which started in LambdaRogue 1.4, released in December 2008, i.e. nearly two years ago)
  • new area with new enemies to explore
  • improved inventory: equipped items don't take up space in your inventory anymore. You can also open your inventory from shop screens, e.g. for selling items to that trader without leaving the shop.
  • new enemy special attacks and vulnerabilities
  • new artwork style, darker than before, but more consistent with the rest of the game -- incl. graphical intro and ending sequences

Most of the fixed bugs have been found thanks to extensive playing and testing by José Almeida, who has, by the way, achieved the first confirmed victory in this game. Thanks a lot, José.

It quite interesting that the download package size is same as extracted. I guess it's difficult to pack already packed images and sound files, but it's funny anyway. I mean there are text files and other stuff that should reduce the packed size. There seems to be some Thumbs.db files (hidden by default) which take space for no reason.

All the images and sound files are responsible for the big download size -- the game itself and the data files are very small.

Perhaps -- if there is enough interest -- I can offer a console-only version, where all graphics and sounds are removed from the download. This might be a very small download.

The download size isn't that big. By the way, I played my first game. It was much like my previous attempts. I was exploring places and stuff, entered Forgotten Realm and when I was unable to kill a guard I tried to escape but then a silent ghost killed me.

This actually got me thinking if I should remove all combat from Kaduria. You know, just make it a non-violent gardening game.

Then why do you enter the Forgotten Realm all the time? Of course it's possible to do, but it's part of the game to understand that this is not a good idea in the beginning. I would say you should at least be level 8 or 9 to attempt this.

Didn't remember what place that was and it was right next to the place I was exit from the first location. I thought you were supposed to go there. The world structure really makes me confused for some reason. I think there is no structure, you just enter various places from another places without any logic.

No, the world structure is simple. There is the temple. Beneath the temple is the main dungeon that goes down to lvl 20. But in lvl 2 are two staircases up, one back to temple and a second one to the wilderness. Thus, in the wilderness is one staircase back to lvl 2 and one down to forgotten realm. So wilderness and temple are actually in the same depth.

in the beginning, it is said to go to the library assistant who is in the sewers i.e. lvl 3.

You go under the temple and then back up to get in wilderness? It is confusing.

Have you ever heard of underground passages? Where you first go deeper, than wander there for a while, searching for the second exit and then return up again?
